But it really isn't the developers' job necessarily to package the software, especially as Koffice is mainly a volunteer effort like most F/OSS projects . Making the code available for users is one of each distro's many jobs. We do get to Koffice packages fairly quickly, overall imo, especially as their developers right now seem to prefer not to have it too widely used.

Plus the developers really have better things to do. Or do you think that they don't have a personal life, with friends, family and work?

Do you always have to be so dramatic? I'm aware developers are *people* with lives. I'm also aware that it ought to be the distro's responsibility to roll their own packages for "third-party" software. But it also seems to me that when this doesn't seem likely, as in the case with KOffice, then it might be in the best interest of the third-party software developer (KOffice) to roll some packages themselves. Yeah, it takes time. And if you have a newborn child that needs attention then obviously you won't be building packages for Kubuntu. But if there are things (related to KOffice) that fall *lower* on the priority list (or ought to!--and aren't there in this case?) than building packages for some distros, then build the packages first.

Is this really such a complicated thing to get across?

No, it's not. but is it too much to understand that a project like Koffice does NOT want to get into packaging (and the resultant bugs and teething issues related to that part of it), or having to choose which distro to package for, and all that. Plus it does NOT yet want too wide an adoption of its code at this time as they still deem it not quite up to par for that level?

But really you might want to see this page

Readiness for End Users and External Developers

The KOffice team had hoped to have time to make the user interface and available feature set ready for end users as well as make the underlying engine ready for external extension developers in time for 2.2. Unfortunately time and limited developer resources didn’t permit to reach both of these goals. The libraries have been reorganized and improved, but the user interface does still not reach the level of quality that the team wants to achieve.
          and from here
          The State of KOffice 2.1
This release is a marked improvement of almost all parts of KOffice compared to 2.0. Version 2.0 was labeled a “platform release”, which was meant as a first preview of the framework and new UI paradigm. In version 2.1, most applications and components have improved significantly but should still only be used by early adopters and probably not as the primary worktool.
Anyway, packages are being worked on right now so this is kinda moot now

Yes, I'm aware of all of this. They're not going to obtain widespread adoption from making available distro packages, especially with a warning stating that it's not ready for widespread adoption. The point is to get the beta out to as many testers as possible that it can be available for widespread adoption sooner than later.

              *sigh*

They are NOT looking for widespread testing and use as of yet, they don't deem it ready for that stage right now. They are not rushing things, it seems
