[SOLVED] Why can't I access my USB printer?

Okay, this has been a problem long enough. My USB connected (directly connected from the laptop) laser printer (Panasonic KX-P4410) isn't seen by the OS, nor of course, by CUPS 1.4.1. I have hplip-cups (and hplip) installed, and according to the description:

USB, JetDirect (network) and parallel-port devices are supported.
I have no problem using this printer in both my Ubuntu and Kubuntu JJ 9.04 installations, but I just can't get Karmic to see it.

    The following packages are installed:
    cups-driver-gutenprint
    foomatic-db
    foomatic-db-engine
    foomatic-db-gutenprint
    foomatic-filters
    foomatick-gui
    hpijs
    ijsgutenprint
    libgutenprint2
    min12xxw
    openprinting-ppds
    printconf
    python-foomatic
What am I missing? I has to be something, but I don't know what. Since installing Karmic, I have not been able to access this USB connected printer.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

Does it show up on the lsusb list?

Also, there's a driver listed here that I don't see on your list of packages:

Hey dibl. I've never had to install/use a specific driver for this printer. Gutenprint et al have always been sufficient, in all previous versions of Kubuntu I've used.

      lsusb reports:

I'm not a printer expert, but I would think it needs to show up on the lsusb list if there's any hope to use it. Here's my Canon:

Re: Why can't I access my USB printer?

I'd agree. I've been thinking for some time now, that the problem is in the kernel, specifically, that a required module that is present in earlier releases of Kubuntu, is 'missing' in Karmic. I don't know why under Karmic, the printer isn't identified by lsusb.

Do me a favor and run grep printer /var/log/dmesg and post what it finds on your rig.

Re: Why can't I access my USB printer?

The USB port I have the printer connected to is 'live' - I've tested that by plugging in my USB mouse and a thumb drive, both of which are recognized and work.

              Rebooted in JJ.

Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
The printer is not shown - no difference from KK.

              grep printer /var/log/dmesg shows:
              [ 20.598694] usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 2 if 0 alt 1 proto 2 vid 0x1309 pid 0xF002
              No different that in KK.

The printer is working here. Cups has two defined printers for it, and both work. I opened CUPS and test printed both.

[I think I didn't filter my modprobe outputs correctly. I'll redo the comparisons and modify the listings below later.]

Made a comparison of modules containing 'usb' in my JJ and KK kernels.
Modules present in the Kubuntu JJ kernel that are not present in the Kubuntu KK kernel (my USB printer works):

There must be something different in the KK kernel modules, regarding registration of your USB printer.
