[SOLVED] Picasa on Karmic -- read below

Just downloaded Kubuntu Karmic, and in general I'm pleased. However, must have Picasa will not work. I downloaded it from Picasa, and it installed. Then I downloaded Wine (not sure if I needed that or if it was also included in Picasa download) but the program will not run.

When I click on the Picasa name, the loading symbol rotates on my desktop for a few moments, and then disappears.

Sadly enough, no Picasa, no Linux for me. I know there are other programs, but none of them seem to feature an upload to online printing, and that's the feature I need the most.

DigiKam looks great, but does not seem to have the upload feature I need. If there's a plug-in for that I missed, that could be my answer.

    Help anyone
    Bob

      Re: Picasa on Karmic

Did you try downloading Picasa for Linux here?: http://picasa.google.com/linux/

I've never tried it, but it should work. It shouldn't require Wine. You might try the FAQ: http://picasa.google.com/linux/faq.html or their forums for help as well: http://groups.google.com/group/Googl...or-Linux?pli=1

You might also try running Picasa from the console and seeing if you get any useful error messages.

Also, I've used Digikam w/ the Picasa upload plugin, and it works pretty well. There used to be a problem where it would crash every OTHER time you used it (literally), but I think that's resolved now.

        Re: Picasa on Karmic

Thanks to both of you who commented already. My problem is not export to PicasWeb, but to an online printing service. Picasa does this automatically... none of the other linux photo software seems to do so.

I did download it from the Google Picasa site... that's the one that didn't work.

I'm going to go over to the Ubuntu forums and see if there's anything there.

          Re: Picasa on Karmic [SOLVED!]

Thank G-d for these forums. My Picasa problem on Karmic has been solved by the following procedure which I found on the Ubuntu forum. Thanks to those who commented here, and to the fellow who figured this one out:

          1. Completely uninstall picasa using Synaptic Package Manager.
          2. In synaptic, go to settings->repositories-other software.
          3. Uncheck the checkbox of deb http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/ stable non-free
          4. Click on Add and add this under the apt line: deb http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/ testing non-free
          5. Now go to edit->reload package information
          6. Type Picasa in quick search, mark for installation and apply.
After the installation completes, I have a working Picasa just like how it was in Windows.

And I have a working version too....
