    "System settings > Desktop" crashes

    Hi!

"System settings > Desktop" crashes 1 second after the widget appears. What can I do?

    Greetings,
    Oliver.

Re: "System settings > Desktop" crashes

Open a Konsole window. Alt-F2 "konsole" with no quote marks.

    In the Konsole, enter
    Code:
    dbus-launch systemsettings
This will open System Settings. Now click "Desktop". When it crashes, there will be error messages in the Konsole. Copy and paste them into your reply here, and maybe we can see what is happening.

Re: "System settings > Desktop" crashes

I let Google search on your error "_XRead: Assertion `dpy->xcb->reply_data != ((void *)0)' failed". It appears to be a problem related to ATI video drivers:

        http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1306215

        http://www.mail-archive.com/ubuntu-b...sg1862726.html

        https://lists.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/msg40234.html

You can review those threads -- the first one appears to claim a "solution", so you might want to investigate that one first. I'm not an ATI graphics user so I'm not able to provide personal testimony, but I would think if you search Ubuntu forums on your ATI chip model, particularly the "hardware" subforum, you should find threads related to setting up your particular ATI card.
