I have installed kubuntu 9.10 from live CD. The system freezes when trying to open a file from any application or with dolphin. After 1 or 2 minutes, the open folder or dolphin shows the files and kubuntu keeps running. But trying to select another directory in the open file menu, makes kubuntu freeze again for another couple of minutes and so on.

Re: kubuntu 9.10 freezes trying to open files or openning dolphin
When you say "system freezes" do you mean your desktop freezes or does your system lock up? Sounds like your desktop is freezing. I assume you have updated since you've done your install.
The difference is important. One way to tell which is happening is to toggle caps lock if your keyboard has an indicator light or try CRTL-ALT-F1 and see if you get to a text console. If you do get the text console, log in and type "killall dolphin" ad CRTL-ALT-F7 to go back to the GUI.
In either case - we need to find out why this is happening so before opening dolphin:
1)open a console and type "top"
2)note what time it is
3)open dolphin, resize the window so it is small enough so you can see the console window
4)try to open a folder
5)see what process(es) jump to the top of the list in the console readout
6)once you are back in charge of your computer, look at /var/log/messages and /var/log/system files for the you noted in step 2

ANOTHER POSSIBLE SOLUTION:
KDE 4.3 is way slower and more unstable the the latest KDE 4.4. There is a post somewhere on this forum that can walk you through the upgrade. This may fix it as well..

Re: kubuntu 9.10 freezes trying to open files or openning dolphin
I moved plasma-appletsrc plasma-desktop-appletsrc plasma-desktoprc and plasmarc to backup files and generated them again restarting the pc. I had to configured the desktop again but it seems that the system has returned to a stable state again. Krdc sessions to my vncserver, that had also become very slow, have also recovered their usual speed. However, I have no idea what led my pc to that weird state. If it ever happens again, I will follow your instructions to try to identify the origin of the problem.
Thanks for your assistance!

Re: kubuntu 9.10 freezes trying to open files or openning dolphin
The unstable system came back again. The only thing I had recently changed in my pc was that I installed autofs to automount my nfs directories, instead of fstab. So I reverted to the former one, uninstalled autofs and the freezing system finally disappeared. I do not know how autofs affects to the mount daemons but in my kubuntu 9.10 it makes the system to freeze a couple of minutes each time any application opens something related to reading directories and files.

Re: kubuntu 9.10 freezes trying to open files or openning dolphin
Hi,
I found the cause of the freezing. I had links to my nfs shares in my home directory. When the server is turned on autofs works great and the links open the nfs directories quite fast. But, when the server is not running and you open dolphin, it tries to show the content of the home directory, starts reading the files and when it reaches the links to the nfs shares it spends 2 or 3 minutes finding out that the nfs shares cannot be mounted. Any application trying to open the home directory has the same behaviour. The solution then is to delete any link to the nfs shares in the home directory.

Re: kubuntu 9.10 freezes trying to open files or openning dolphin
I don't use autofs, but I do load nfs shares in my fstab. If you use to option "soft" in the fstab mount line it should allow you to continue and mount the shares when available. Another option would be "noauto, user" thus not attempting to mount the shares unless you try and access them.

Re: kubuntu 9.10 freezes trying to open files or openning dolphin
In the case the server is switched off and the host is already running and then the server is turned on, the nfs shares will not be accessible unless autofs is used. Both soft and noauto options will not automount the nfs shares in this situation.
