The desktop is made of the plasma objects -> If the plasma (desktop) is crashing there can't be a desktop.

    Try to restart the plasma-desktop:

    Press Alt+F2 and type konsole.
When the konsole is running, start the plasma desktop with command:
    Code:
    plasma-desktop
Is the plasma desktop starting or do you get a new crash report ?

And if nothing happens when you press Alt-F2 and type "plasma-desktop" you may need to reinstall the plasma-desktop package.

Uhm so how would I know which plasmoid maybe crashing my desktop? I haven't added anything new to my plasma desktop as far as i remember. There'd be the weather widget and a couple of directory views and that's it, nothing too fancy...

I also tried to reset my desktop by renaming these files
              Code:
              ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-appletsrc
              ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc
              ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-desktoprc
              ~/.kde/share/config/plasmarc
and then starting plasma-desktop but it's still crashing

Then I even moved all my stuff from ~/.kde up to ~/kdebackup but not even this would help :

Are you using the KDE 4.4.0 from the Kubuntu PPA
Is the plasma widget from the official Ubuntu repository (for the KDE 4.3) ?

Okay, purged the plasma-widget-customizeable-weather , logged out, logged back in CRASH.
logged out, removed my just recreated /home/reg/.kde, logged in CRASH.

                    Re: no desktop or taskbar

I just applied a bunch of updates...
                    Something to check:

                    1) Did the update remove something ? Checking the dpkg log with the konsole:
                    Code:
                    grep remove /var/log/dpkg.log
Are there resent removed packages ?

                    2) Was the update partial ? Bad/broken packages ?

Sometimes a mixed system is a bit crashy.

Try to do a full upgrade. Konsole:
                    Code:
                    sudo apt-get update
                    Code:
                    sudo apt-get clean
                    Code:
                    sudoa apt-get dist-upgrade
                    Any error messages ?

                    Any help ?

How did you do this ?

Plasma settings or all KDE settings ?

If you do this from the KDE session then the KDE could overwrite the copied ("~/kdebackup back to ~/.kde") settings with the current session settings.
