Lost Alt and Meta keys function after upgrade to Kde 4.4 SC

I seem to have lost the Alt and Meta keys functions after upgrading to Kde 4.4. CTRL key works fine. That is, pressing any alt- or meta- combination no longer has any effect. The problem affects Kde apps and the kde environment only, it seems. For instance Alt-backarrow works correctly in Firefox, but Alt-F1 fails to bring up the application launcher, etc.

Does anyone know what panel and/or setting controls the behavior of the Alt and Meta keys?

What do you see when you run the command

xmodmap

?

Btw, by default isn't the application launcher Alt+F2?
