    [SOLVED] My Kubuntu experience.....

After doing a ton of research around the Linux OS, I decided to install Ubuntu on my netbook, dual boot it with Windows 7, installation was easy took less than 15 minutes, booted into Plasma-Netbook, very nice looking OS, but I can't help but think it's sumwhat limited when I looked at the Kubuntu Desktop version, seems to me the netbook version has been designed for a pickup-n-play user. It just appears to lack so many customisable options.

Anyway, once updating everything to KDE 4.4, again impressive UI. However, it just seems to come with a massive list of problems,

Firstly, Firefox Installer..... it does NOTHING, I clicked it, the little icons bounced, but nothing, I even tried reinstalling the installer, but still nothing

Next problem.... Plasma, just why can't I seem to do what I want to do with it, I want to resize the panel and install a panel spacer, I downloaded the spacer to my downloads folder, and tried to install, Plasma didn't recognise it, so basically, I was stuck with the standard setup and I couldn't edit any of it.

Third and final problem....Kpackage Manager, what is this programs problem? I downloaded VLC, it installed which went fine, but go to Multimedia, and surprise, surprise, no VLC icon......WHY?!

Also, why is it that when I uninstall and attempt to reinstall Kubuntu Plasma-Netbook, Kpackage Manager just ignores my request and goes back to searching for what I typed in?!

Anyways, if anyone can help me with these problems I would be greatly appreciative, I want to get into the Linux OS it just seems to me that it's lacking that usability factor, you know as it, it works, the whole OS just seems slow and jumpy, now it could be the fact I'm running it on an Advent 4213, 1GB RAM setup, I don't know, but if someone could recommend an alternative for my netbook then I'll give that a go. One thing I will say for Kubuntu is, not having to install drivers is great.

I recommend that you use Adept or Synaptic instead, also Ubuntuzilla is excellent for downloading Firefox and keeping up to date.

Don't know, luck of the draw? Convoluted representation of facts? Too much to read? Bad hair day? Hard to tell...

I'm glad you got some help though. BTW, if this is sorted, could you please mark the thread as solved? Thanks

Speaking for no one but myself, it's far easier to help solve one problem, than it is to attempt to reply to a "laundry list" of issues. When you say things like "lacks so many customisable options" and "massive list of problems", how is a person supposed to address that in a reply?

Regarding plasma -- yes, it is quite a handful of new interfaces and methods, I think every KDE 4 user is still getting the hang of it. I know I am. You just have to research it, and review other threads that are related to using it.

Regarding Firefox installer -- huh, I've never used it. I would advise you to go do this first:

          http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766683

then post back if you still don't have something you need.

Kpackage Manager? It's a dud, IMHO. I use synaptic to review packages and either synaptic or apt-get to install them.

Plasma Netbook -- I have no clue.

            Re: [HELP] My Kubuntu experience.....

I wouldn't really consider this solved as my initial issues haven't been addressed. So let me make it a little clearer.

Why is the UI so slow and unresponsive? and is there a way to make it actually work e.g when I click on an app, it opens

Probably because so few people run a netbook, so they have no knowledge or experience with Kubuntu on netbooks?

When I read your list of complaints my first thought was that your iSO didn't pass the md5sum check OR your CD didn't burn properly. Did you try your reinstall with the same CD?

                Re: [HELP] My Kubuntu experience.....

I tired running both Netbook and Desktop version with different ISO's even downloading both from inside the other OS, via Kpackager. Ubuntu runs ok, but I prefer the Kubuntu interface

                  Re: [HELP] My Kubuntu experience.....

the netbook UI is still unfinished ...
i don't use it on my netbook since i find regular plasma to be much better for my needs,
you can install and use the regular plasma by doing the following:

                  1. alt +f2 to open a run box
                  2. type in konsole <press enter>
                  3. in the konsole type sudo apt-get install plasma-desktop
                  4. press alt+esc (system activity opens up)
                  5. find plasma-netbook and kill it, close system activity("desktop" will go black)
                  6. again press alt+f2 to open run box
                  7. type in plasma-desktop <press enter>
                  8. and then remove the plasma-netbook package (if you don't want to use the netbook UI)

for package management u should install synaptic (sudo apt-get install synaptic from a terminal)
also if you want firefox install it (sudo apt-get install firefox from a terminal or use synaptic to do so).

                      Re: [SOLVED] My Kubuntu experience.....

hey Jay , just becuase its a netbook doesn't mean you HAVE to run the netbook version.. you can still run a regular version , i run the kubuntu-desktop version on mine (only the UI is different). and then i tweaked it so that it runs nice on the 1024*600 screen they give you....

                        Re: [SOLVED] My Kubuntu experience.....

I know but I like the UI of the netbook versions, I'm dual booting with Windows 7 anyway so I thought I'd explore linux as a play thing as my attempts at getting OSX running on the Advent 4213 have so far failed, and I don't really want an OSX "themed" Linux

I do like both the Kubuntu and Ubuntu Netbook versions, however the Kubuntu version just doesn't get on with my netbook at all, its slow, and unresponsive, UNR works fine, no lag or anything. I may look into the the next KNR if its better
