Partial sound in Kubuntu 9.10

Hello all,

I installed a new soundcard this week and moved up to Kubuntu 9.10 and now have partial sound. I have managed to get sound through Amarok playing MP3's and the automated sounds KDE plays when loading up and closing down but cannot get any sound through other methods such as through VLC or websites such as Youtube or other video playback sites. Can anyone advise anything? When I try using Pulse the system nothing seems to happen and I don't get any error messages (of which I am aware). I have installed the Pulse libraries and placed Pulse as the most preferred item in the sound output items.

check you mixer and make sure the pcm channel is turned up on the new card.
