Increasing resolution enlarges and pixelates windows (screenshot)

    Kubuntu 9.10
    KDE 4.3.2
    Fresh installation (2/13/2010) from kubuntu-9.10-dvd-amd64.ico
    Bug fixes installed
    Running in VMware 7

The default resolution after installing is 800x600. All settings in VMware that have to do with the display are disabled (so VMware can't tell the OS to change the resolution, etc). I also have VMware installations of Ubuntu and Mandriva with no problems whatsoever. I installed Kubuntu the day before with the same results. The current installation is the result of completely deleting that VMware virtual machine and remaking it from scratch.

At 800x600, everything looks fine, but when I increase the resolution, things get messed up as you can clearly see in the screenshot. Notice that the title bars at the tops of windows look fine, as does the task bar at the bottom of the screen, however the contents of menus and labels in windows along with the icons in Firefox are enlarged.

If I start one of these programs, like Firefox, and while it's still open I increase the resolution from 800x600 to 1920x1200, Firefox will look just fine at first. But if I then close and reopen Firefox, it will look messed up. Likewise, if I then lower the resolution to 800x600, Firefox will continue to look messed up until I restart it.

Also, if the resolution is at 1920x1200 and I restart, it will start back up at 800x600. But when I open system settings and go to the display settings, it will suddenly change resolution to 1920x1200.

All settings in VMware than can affect the actual display of the virtual machine are disabled. When Kubuntu is running at 800x600, things look fine. When, from within Kubuntu, I change the resolution to 1920x1200, that's when things get messed up as you see.

Also, notice that not only Firefox, but Dolphin is screwed up as well. See that it's title bar looks fine, but it's contents, buttons, labels, drop down boxes, etc are also abnormally large. Notice the right side of Dolphin shows the labels getting squeezed and screwed up because of their abnormal size. Also notice that the task bar at the bottom looks normal.

I certainly did not create a small Linux desktop with up-scaled windows (if such a thing could have happened on accident, let me know). As I said, I also have Ubuntu (Gnome) and Mandriva (KDE) virtual machines and they have no such problems. I've installed Kubuntu twice with the same results.

Question 1: Do you happen to have ATI video card? If so, than one of my friend's resolution did that and I might know how to fix it, i'd just have to play on his computer for a bit :P... so let me know if you have an ATI video card.
