[SOLVED] KDE 4.4 problem- Corrupted graphics at login screen and no desktop
Then I noted down the changelog. As I speak now, ppa7 is being built in which the changelog says it will remove the automatic log out/shutdown of KDM when you do upgrading of workspace.

This is to confirm that the latest update (38 packages) fixed corrupted graphics when bootsplash is enable. Note that the update blanked my screen and have to wait a few minutes before rebooting (the update continued even with a black screen).
Re: *** FIXED *** KDE 4.4 problem- Corrupted graphics at login screen and no desktop
Last two batches of updates (ppa5 and ppa7) consistently crashed X server on my computer during the update process, just like the initial KDE4.4 release and its first update did. I resorted to installing updates from text console via apt-get dist-upgrade yet after each attempt I found my KDM session and X server gone. I had to reboot to get to KDM login again. That's with the splash option removed from the kernel boot parameters, with splash enabled each update will crash my computer hard to the extent that only power cycling it make reboot possible.
Nice try, waiting for ppa10...

The change log for ppa7 means that after that update (ppa8 onward), you will not be kicked out to the tty. By downloading and update to ppa7, your system was still at ppa5 so of course you was kicked out. Would love to have another release just to prove my point.
I can enable my usplash since ppa5 updates without any problem.
And lovely Core i7

Finally, run $ sudo dpkg --configure -a
Same here. Ran the update, got kicked to the text prompt, waited for the drives to stop spinning, ran dpkg and let it finish the housecleaning, and now I can enable bootsplash without errors. So all is right with the world again.

I've noticed a slight decrease in performance, too, but it's only a slight one, and only on certain effects (primarily the cube effect when switching desktops; it was silky smooth before but stutters slightly now). I really don't think it's a big deal, and I like the other KDE improvements, so I'm sticking with it. I imagine performance improvements will come with time as the Kubuntu dev team gets KDE 4.4 under control.
