Re: KDE 4.4 problem - Corrupted graphics at login screen and no desktop

Alright, I went ahead and "reopened" the thread since this seems to be a larger problem than just what's affecting me.

Re: KDE 4.4 problem - Corrupted graphics at login screen and no desktop

I can confirm this. In fact, my computer will reboot right at the point when X server is initialized if splash is enabled. The only way to get KDE to start after the upgrade is to remove "splash" from the kernel command line in the GRUB configuration.

I have an ATI RadeonHD graphics card configured with the open source radeon driver.

Re: KDE 4.4 problem - Corrupted graphics at login screen and no desktop

For me, it appeared the problem was that the login screen was trying to load a theme that didn't exist. I booted directly to a terminal session from grub, logged in that way, did "startx" to go into KDE, then in system settings changed the login screen theme to something else. now I can log in with no problem, though from time to time I find that x will randomly shunt me into the multicolor-band-at-the-top-of-the-screen-of-death.

I uped to KDE-4.4.0 last night from 4.3.5

so far so good ............I can boot with quiet splash and get the new kdm login and background (I was using a custom made).
loging in and I get simaler graficks coruption ....looks like it's trying to run a new default login splash over my custom one.........but it dose make it to the desktop.

I changed the login splash back to the new default and now no more problems ......for me .........so far

              2.6.31-19-generic Karmic-9.10 KDE-4.4.0 uped from 4.3.5 Intel Corporation 82915G/GV/910GL Integrated Graphics Controller

Re: KDE 4.4 problem - Corrupted graphics at login screen and no desktop

Okay, this is what I tried:
-get rid of splash from the grub menu
                -reinstall plasma-desktop
-run plasma-desktop from terminal or alt+F2
-boot recovery mode->run kdm (root) / sudo kdm from login

There are no custom kdm or themes / backgrounds

Login works and gives me a black screen (no plasma) with the panel and sound.

                Edit:
Upgrade worked fine on my laptop and lucid is fine as well. Must be something with my graphic card.

Re: KDE 4.4 problem - Corrupted graphics at login screen and no desktop

Installed a bunch of fresh KDE4.4 updates that arrived tonight, in the middle of "apt-get dist-upgrade" process X session crashed and I was left in the text console. Had to run "dpkg --configure -a" to fix the system. Tried adding back splash option to kernel command line after that but still X server crashed all the time causing system to reboot (!). This time however it happened later in the login process so the KDM login screen appeared for a second before computer rebooted. Still no way to have splash option work.

Also, starting KMail brings up an error message saying that Nepomuk server was disabled. Tried installing Virtuoso server and its plugins, no effect.

I ran the upgrade from Synaptic and had a similar problem as you: as it was installing the update, X suddenly bombed out to the text console. However, I was immediately able to run "sudo kdm" and got back into KDE without a problem, so apparently it finished up in the background.

This has been a fun ride, hasn't it? I haven't had this much fun upgrading since I used Gentoo.

Re: KDE 4.4 problem - Corrupted graphics at login screen and no desktop

the round of update/upgrades tonight 34-38 of them (the originall upgrade to kde4.4.0 was 189) was like the last 2 post's in the midell of unpacking and instaling plasma crashes and I get droped to tty8 witch is displaying what looks like the end of the boot prosess.

tty1-6 are thare but tty7 is dead..................I reboot and every thing seams ok I can log in and get the desktop and all is as I left it........so I run the apt-get dist-upgrade agin and it start's all over like it had never don it befor??
and agin just droped me to a tty wile runing the setup of the packages ......this time I login to tty6 and run sudo dpkg --configure -a
and it dose seam to finishup so agin a restart .........login ....pull up a terminal and do it all agin......this time thars onley a few updates left and it runs them off ok.

anuther reboot and when I logon thar are airent widget's on 3 of 5 desktops that I have never used......I close them out and run anuther round of dpkg --configure -a (1 more it seams to do)
and the update upgrade with apt-get to check and........................
2 more reboot's to check and all seams fine so far I can boot from grub to kdm with the splash and then login as normall.

Weeuuuww hold on to the reins boys she's a bucking............

Re: KDE 4.4 problem - Corrupted graphics at login screen and no desktop

Looks like I have a variation to the theme.

Computer boots up, then goes to a multi-colored screen that consists of nothing but rectangular multicolored spaces.

However, underneath it all the boot process continues. I can hear the welcome tune.
I also can call up an application (or in my case a Konsole) and execute something.

Unfortunately, it is of absolutely no use because I can not see the results.

This is most annoying. And it happens often enough with KDE apps.

Had to re-install the OS in order to get a working Kubuntu OS back.

                        Update:

Just installed the latest update. The blinking, multi-colored screen problem is gone. Normal login.

Unfortunately, now there is no more sound. Used to work just fine.
Thank you, KDE. For the fixed screen problem, of course.

                        Update to update:

"Leave" button is no longer working!!

                          Upgrading with:
                          Code:
                          sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
gave me few package upgrades but with the same result as before.

                          doing :
                          Code:
                          sudo dpkg --configure -a
cleans up a few things but makes no difference in the end. >

                          I guess I'll wait.

Lucid seems to be playing nice for now.

                          Edit:
Arrow keys not working in recovery mode so I can't use that either. Very >

I've Seen on IRC that this error is observed from these threads by Kubuntu package team. They have removed a patch of KDM. I have updated(ca 38 packages) and everything is OK for me now(autologin). During the update I got a blank screen, have patience and wait, the update continues in the background. Restart after some minutes.

I too had the same pixilated screen on my Compaq Presario F700 laptop after upgrading to KDE4.4. The startup looked normal, but after logging in, the screen went black and then crazy graphics pixels showed up in the center of the screen. I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst, deleting the "splash" option, and this resolved my issues.

So we can enable the boot splash again? I kinda miss it.
