When will KDE 4.4 be available in Kubuntu

I did something pretty stupid today!

I got a notification from KDE.org that the final stable release of 4.4 was available and I followed the link from the KDE.org site to the Kubuntu site, didn't pay attention to what I was doing and ended up installing 4.4 RC2 which is now running slow and missing some plasma features

I can still use KDE but am a bit annoyed I screwed up my otherwise perfect desktop

Just wondering if anyone knows when the stable release of 4.4 will be available for Kubuntu so I will know how long I have to wait to sort out this mess!

    Thanks in advance

    Stable 4.4 was released today @ kde.org. 8)

I'm a n00b and also wondering how long it takes to merge the updates and make a new distro-update.

    Thanks guys,

when a kde release is out its usually packaged for *buntu and available with in a week or less.. RC users should be upgraded when its packaged.. (but for karmic will end up prolly in the "backports" secton, if at all) check www.kubuntu.org or the forum for news.

          Hi,
Lets say I am a Kubuntu developer (I am not) what am I doing right now ? What is the job waiting to be done ?

KDE 4.4 is released, Arch (I think its a binary distro), Gentoo (source based) already have it available. So probably a Kubuntu developer does a lot more than just compile stuff ? Probably there is also package optimization and customisation or something like that ... What has to be done to bring KDE 4.4 to Kubuntu community ?

I would like to read about such stuff, where can I do that ?

According to that page https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Kubuntu/Ninjas/Packaging the sources are already in development for almost a week, because they were uploaded to KDE's official ftp somewhere at 4 February. So, I hope, new KDE will be available shortly.
But, I can also say, that the packaging of KDE is much slower in Kubuntu. Taking into account that this is the only software why we all are using Kubuntu (non Ubuntu), developers could improve lead times. Is this due to lack of people in a team or due to a lot of different releases need to be compiled(sparc, powerpc)?

P.S.: I don't want to criticize anything and anyone, Kubuntu is really the best distro I've ever tried (among OpenSUSE, Fedora, Gentoo, etc) and the fastest one (even faster than famous sidux), but many users are very excited with new releases and would like to get it as faster as possible.

                Reality check

                - Is this some kind of competition ? The fastest wins ?
                - If you want to use the latest (trunk) there is the option to compile it yourself.
                - The planned release date is the April 29th for the Kubuntu Lucid Lynx.
                - Karmic packages are backported from the Lucid (Lucid packages are compiling now > Re: Lucid Release Schedule, Plans, KDE 4.4)
                - The developers are humans that have a real life/work/school/family...

We have to wait around two month to upgrade kde to 4.4 ? It's a joke I think, Im right ya?

It is not a some marketing in our linux community, new release, new software... It is? Is that way where kubuntu goes?

If it is, God bless our community to have strength for waiting.

Re: When will KDE 4.4 be available in Kubuntu

The second release candidate is already available for installation in karmic - I am running it now. It has a few glitches but substantially it's Okay.

I would be very surprised if they do not update it to kde 4.4 within a few days. However, it's one thing for KDE to release the source code, it's quite another to compile all the .deb files and then to make sure they will all install without conflicts or dependency problems. It seems quite reasonable to me to be patient as it's a pretty big job, for a small number of people to do, and everyone will expect everything to work properly from day 1.

I'm preaching to the faithful I know but the basic philosophy of this distro is to release with up to date packages (or as up to date as possible) and thereafter for new packages to be by way of security updates. Upgrades tend to appear in the next version. Clearly because of the rapid development of KDE and it's importance they have made an exception and released the RC to Karmic and I have no doubt we will get 4.4.0 as soon as it's ready.

FWIW I am chomping at the bit too

In some sense, yes. I think most people would be quite steamed if a major update was delayed for months or even weeks. But at the same time, yes, we are quite spoiled with near-instant update gratification.

                      - If you want to use the latest (trunk) there is the option to compile it yourself.
Easier said than done for most. Kubuntu is aimed (at least partly) at being a desktop replacement for people moving over from Windows, most of whom would have an easier time developing a cure for cancer than compiling KDE 4.4 from source.

                      - The planned release date is the April 29th for the Kubuntu Lucid Lynx.
What do you think is more worthwhile? Investing all this time in getting a *major* update into an *alpha* version of your distro, or using that time for getting it into the backports of your *now* widely used stable version. I mean, it's a *major* update for goodness' sake! Forget about Lucid for the time being and stop prioritizing things ass-backwards.

                      - The developers are humans that have a real life/work/school/family...
Agreed, and boy, am I supremely appreciative of all their hard work. But that doesn't make everything they do fine and dandy. There's always room for improvement (and *constructive* and *helpful* criticisms!)

Re: When will KDE 4.4 be available in Kubuntu

Most of kde is already 4.4.0 on the lucid repos (not all though, a few utils and some plasma packages are still RC2). Once those are built someone will likely backport them to karmic and you'll see the announcement on kubuntu.org (at which point it should be safe to upgrade).

Generally, you'll have to wait a few days for kde releases, since it takes time to apply patches and to make sure packages build nicely. Some distributions maybe faster if they have more people working on the packages or have less patches to apply. But like rog said, it's not a race.

                          Hi.
I read some post in here about the availability KDE SC 4.4 in Karmic repos. First of all I'm a Linux user since 2009, about one year. And, from all Distros I have tried, I choose Kubuntu. I'm running Karmic 9.10/KDE 4.4 RC2. Because in my opinion it join the best from 2 worlds, Ubuntu and KDE.
When I have see the announce of the KDE 4.4 RC2 in kubuntu.org I decide to give it a tried an install it, thinking that when the final release come out, it be available soon for upgrade from the repo of Karmic.
From all I read in here, I think I'm wrong.

I like to said something about it. For all i'm reading over the internet, Linux is growing every years. And this only append because every day more users chose to change to Linux. So, is important to please to all this users. Because if this users are satisfied they bring alone all the friends and family.

Also, if I installed RC2 is because also want to give a small help to the development of the Kubuntu future packages. I have reported some bugs in KDE RC2, and also this is one way of helping.
And the penalty is stay in RC2, with all the bugs associated until Lucid is out.
Sorry, but this is not right.
                          regards
                          Paulo

Installed and running fine here. The Plasma and network manager crashes on shutdown seem to have gone.

Congrats and thanks to the devs - to have this available the day after the release of the main project is a great achievement - someone has been listening to the customers
