    How are you attempting to burn the .iso? How are you launching k3b?

      I am attempting to burn the lucid-desktop-amd64.iso image to an empty cd-r ... I have just noticed its 715mbs, and the disc says *700mb* could this be the issue? Should I burn it to a dvd+r?

      ++ It seems I was correct.. I have found this : http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/lucid/alpha1

      *The Kubuntu alpha 1 desktop ISOs are too large to fit on a CD. They can be burned to a DVD or USB stick, or you can install using the alternate ISOs. *
      I assume that is the issue with this iso. Ok *phew* I thought this was something serious.

        Good work answering your own question. If only every noob would do that much research for themselves ...
