KDE Playground - Applications that are early in their lifecycle.

Test binaries (mplayer) can be found > Personal Package Archives for Ubuntu >> PPA for Rog131 >>> Package name contains: phonon. (amd64 is not building)
The Phonon backend settings are saved to the ~/.kde/share/config/servicetype_profilerc.
Example:
[PhononBackend]
Entry0_Preference=3
Entry0_Service=phononbackends/mplayer.desktop
Entry1_Preference=2
Entry1_Service=phononbackends/xine.desktop
Entry2_Preference=1
Entry2_Service=phononbackends/vlc.desktop
NumberOfEntries=3
