    Ubuntu Repos slow to download

Not sure if it is slow or not downloading correctly. When using any package manager, updating hangs close to the last repo for more than a minute. I have three machines (1-, 2- & 4-core) all having basic similar instances of Kubuntu 9.10. All respond the same.

I use Synaptic so I can see each repo download since it is so detailed. It shows zero download for each repo.

    Here is my sources.list:

Have you tried changing the server?

I guess from your sarcastic reply that you have.

The sarcasm wasn't directed at you but more about my own flaws. I really didn't think of trying that. So, yes, stoopid me!

So, I chose a few other servers. It still is hanging on the download process. I can't tell if it is downloading everything and then hanging on the subsequent process or not.

I checked the apt term.log but that only shows what is happening on installing the updates. Is there somewhere else I can follow a log?

OK, I guess you could try pinging the various servers and see the response times.

In Synaptic select: Settings --Repositories --Download from: (click the down arrow and select "other") --choose your region on the left, then "Select Best Server" That should get you the current best choice. Works for me, YMMV depending where you are.

Good idea, I had forgotten about that.

if disabling the server doesn't help you, try to disable those ppa's you think causing the problem. OR you can disable all additional ppa and add them one by one until you found the one with the problem....

I just tried doing that for UK servers and it found the best one to be in Italy, very strange.

Italy? Must have been the fastest one... at that time... 8)

I was just surprised that I selected UK servers only and it found one in Italy.

I looked at that function a little closer and found that it tests them all. (well...325 of them, anyway) I thought you could limit the selection by choosing your region, but that must not be true. Presumably the one selected is the fastest one with the least dropped packets, given the current 'traffic' conditions on the net. From here in Alaska, it chose Oregon.

The "--Download from:" option does not appear on the Repositories dialog. I am using the 0.62.7 version of Synaptic. I can find a server selection option in KPackageKit.
