    I have a Radeon HD 4890, which is an R700 based card. The oss driver only supports 2D accel with it, so I downloaded the driver from ATIls web site. I did a "chmod +x" on the downloaded file, I ran it with "sudo ./ati-driver-installer-9-12-x86.x86_64.run" and followed the instructions to install. I then logged out and restarted the X Server. When I logged back in, 3D was enabled, but sound in my SDL games was dead. After trying everything in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1309656, I broke my X Server. So I reinstall Kubuntu, updated my kernal, and installed Xorg from GIT https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa. The new XORG had 3D for my card but it was way to slow for games. So, I tried the binary driver again, tried to fix the sound- and broke my X server. I also tried the FGLRX driver from the repos on a fresh install, but that didn't work either.

    Any ideas?

    Congrats, the 4890 is supposed to be a beauty, I am drooling for one.

    Anyway, it is much better to produce .deb files from the installer and then install those. If you just install it the way you did, many files may be overwritten and you can end up in a mess. This is why we have packages

    Anyway, if you pass "--help" to the installer it will tell you how to do that. I would try to install the packages as such as a first step.

    I am hoping we'll have good 3D support by Ubuntu 9.04 for R600/700, everything seems to indicate that this will be the case. I will start testing lucid in a month or so ...

    As for the sound, I am not sure, but installing latest Pulse might help, please see the howto I wrote not too long ago here in the forum, HOWTO's section.

      BTW-- all the desktop effects worked with xorg git, it's amazing what they have done for the bR600/R700

        Great!

        There is a database, I think it is in /etc/amdSOMETHING, I'll check later tonight, sometimes it gets corrupted and it's good to remove it and reboot ...

          I updated SDL http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...2&postcount=24, instaled Alsa. And did http://vdrift.net/Forum/viewtopic.php?t=1245

          Sound seems to work now
