Sound is not working in Kubuntu-desktop 9.10 Rhythembox, Amorok, youtube etc.

I know there are a bunch of other "sound problem" posts here and i've read through them and none of the answers seem to help me at all.

I have a Dell inspiron 1525 just but Kubuntu-desktop Koala on last night. the sound doesn't work in either speakers or headphones BUT I can hear the kubuntu jingle at start up. any suggestions?

to test the sound I'm using Rhythembox and Amarok and neither are producing sound (the track is playing though) maybe it's just a plugin I'm missing?

here is the terminal output when I type in lspci

That you hear sound at start up means that your sound (00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)) is properly recognized and set up.

Click on the Audio icon in the system try. Then click on the Mixer button. Check that the Master and/or PCM sliders aren't set at the bottom (zero volume).
