Kubuntu 8.04 to 9.10 upgrade: flashplugin problem

After upgrading from 8.04 to 9.10, I have a problem with flashplugin. Here is the error message:
E: flashplugin-nonfree: Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should reinstall it before attempting a removal.

I have tried to remove it, to reinstall it, but I always come up with this error (in Synaptic). How can I remove it and then try to add it again?

Are there files somewhere that I could just delete, then start over? Is there a safe command line script that I can use to remove it?

    Thanks for any help.

    Hi,

Yes, you could do it from the command line, but it's easy from Synaptic. Simply mark it for Complete Removal. Remove, then install again. That should do. I would also search for packages using "flash" in the name and also "complete remove" them (this is also called "purge" in the apt lingo).

    Hope this helps!

I'm having the the same problem, only I can not get the desktop gui to function and only have tty.
I've tried just about every thing I could find in the forums on the subject and the cd's recovery option with no luck.
This was my first kubuntu upgrade and everything seems to be held up on flashplugin-nonfree issue.
      I've tried, sudo apt-get:
      dist-upgrade
      update & upgrade

any help would be greatly appreciated.

        sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree
does not remove it ?, if not try with caution to do so via dpkg.

          Hi

Yes, I've tried "remove" and "purge". Currently I'm downloading the live cd version to hopefully pull some last min files from the drive and also see what I can accomplish with the live version, but could you explain more about the dpkg method

          TIA

              Hi

unfortunately no, because..... at the moment (imo) the flashplugin-nonfree appears to be stalling the kde gui, so I only have a tty screen and no access to synaptic manager. I am hoping that the "live" cd version may help in solving that problem.

you could try frome the CLI

                Code:
                sudo apt-get purge Flashplugin-installer && sudo ap-get purge flashplugin-nonfree
but the startup problems are probabley vid related.

I agree about the the start up being vid related but as I suspected the flash plugin is interfering with that install as well.

I'm beginning to suspect a fresh install of 9.1 is the way to go.

The title of this post interests me:
                    Kubuntu 8.04 to 9.10 upgrade
Received wisdom is that you can/should only upgrade from one version to the next e.g. 8.04 to 8.10, 8.10 to 9.04 and 9.04 to 9.10.

Is this an attempt to do a straight upgrade from 8.04 to 9.10?

                    How was it done?

I personally (because I didn't start the thread) did it via synaptic manager using the full upgrade button.
