    OpenOffice 3.1 Stalls

Machine is a new Intel P55KG with 8 Gigs of memory. CPU is Intel i7 quad core. Nothing on this machine should be slow. OpenOffice almost always comes to a near halt when opening more than one document. It almost appears like something is timing out. Amount of delay seems to be fairly consistent. Any ideas most welcome.

BTW - Virtualbox installed just fine and I'm able to run Windows based CAD at what appears normal speed. Great system if I can get the OpenOffice problem fixed.

    Thanks for any information.

    Re: OpenOffice 3.1 Stalls

we are considering using openOffice (3.1) instead of Microsoft Office 2007. We don't have an Exchange Server (not yet) and are now standing at a crossroad and try to decide whether we will prolong Microsoft licenses (and introduce MS Exchange) or we change to open Office.

So far I've considered the following issues:
    - Backward compatibility for old documents
    - Migration path of current groupware solution
    - Integratoin possibililty for existing Programs (like ERP Systems).
    - Educational issues regarding a new office solution
    - Licensing costs...
    - Support issues

I wonder if there is someone around who can post some filed reports here that state whether to walk this painfull but free road once and live on happily ever after or to stay bound to the dark side However I do understand that using standardized software has its advantages.

    Any feedback is highly appreciated!

    Thanks

Bit late to reply but I had a problem with very slow response from openoffice 3.1 when opening and closing files. In my case it was solved by removing the integration package openoffice.org-kde

Some suggest installing openoffice.org-gtk instead to have better looking dialogues but I did not try this as OO now works fine.

I had the same issue with openoffice being excruciatingly slow with saving or renaming files. The openoffice updates this morning (24 Feb, 2010) seem to have fixed whatever was causing the problem.

And I'm even later, but I've encountered this issue elsewhere. Rather than removing the integration package, you can go the the OpenOffice.org menu, select Tools>Options>General (second item under the OpenOffice.org category there) and tick "Use OpenOffice.org dialogs." Then click OK and you should find a noticeable improvement. This is, as I understand it, a problem between KDE4 and OpenOffice.org - not a Kubuntu problem.
