When I open certain applications (I haven't figured out all the applications) such as a game, playback of all other sound that I am currently listening to stops. I have to restart the application that I was listening to get sound back. Any help is appreciated.

You seem to be missing a sound server. Do you see "Pulse Audio" in System Settings? You may want to try moving it to the top for all categories and see if that does it. More in depth, this is what worked for me:
