    desktop running slow

I installed Kubuntu 9.10 on my PC about a week ago and the desktop is running very slow. For example when I switch desktops it takes roughly 10 seconds for the new desktop to show. My PC is a pentium III with 250 Mbytes of memory.

When I run 'top' all the real memory is being used and about 25% of 2-gigabytes of swap space is being used. The process using the most CPU time is plasma-desktop using roughly 10% of the CPU time. Xorg is using about 5% of the CPU time.

When I was running Kubuntu 7.x, KDE was running between 2 and 3 orders of magnitude faster.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can speed up this version of Kubuntu on this PC?

    Hi Jim

I think you are gonna like this:
    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3106858.0

An alternative would be to install lxde anr run some kde applications from there.

I think 256 Mb is borderline:

Where I live I can shop online for a 512Mb or 1Gb RAM for really, very very little money, it may be a good investment (most likely 1gb will be a better choice and will cost marginally more than 512 Mb these days). Of course I know in some places hardware can be really expensive

    Hope this helps!

      Leo,

Thank you for the advise. After reading the minimum requirements, it looks like it is time to upgrade the memory on my system. I've thought about doing it in the past, but up until now, the PC has run pretty well.
