[RESOLVED] No sound from flashplayer (Youtube) in 9.10 Karmic from Firefox

Since I've been in 9.10, I get no sound, as stated in the title.

Following various things I found thru Google, i installed

    sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound

after deleting the existing flashplayerplugin. The picture is fine.

    I'm in 32-bit Kubuntu 9.10. I do have libflashplayer.so available:

    $ locate libflashplayer.so
    /home/jon/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so
    /home/jon/downloads/install_flash_player_9_linux/libflashplayer.so

(They seem to be the same.)

    Help, please.

How about KDE applications, do they have sound?

      Thanks for the answer.

Amarok works fine. Every time I boot, tho, I get a messages saying (approximately) that some sound devices are not running and asking if I want to delete them. I do not. The list includes a bunch of Audigy things like

      SB Audigy 2 ZX [SB0353] (rev.4, serial...)

I had that in Jaunty too and the sound worked fine for everything.

I have an Intel sound device I don't use on the mother board. Could that be creating confusion?

I had a similar problem. (K)Ubuntu picks up two sound devices for my system, my Audigy 2ZS and the sound chip on my HD4850. If I leave it alone, Ubuntu would constantly switch between the two every time I reboot the machine, so sometimes I would get sound and sometimes not. Sometimes while the rest of the desktop was using the correct device (Audigy), others like Flash would use the wrong one. Maybe this is happening in your case?
What I did to fix it was to edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf so that Ubuntu would stop using my HD4850 and switch exclusively to the Audigy card. Basicall what you do is figure out what sound devices the system recognizes:

        Code:
        less /proc/asound/modules
Make note of the devices it lists. Now go to the file I mentioned before and add the line:

        Code:
options <name of sound device you do not wish to use> index=-2
Save and reboot. Now check your check /proc/asound/modules again and your Audigy should be the first device listed.

          Hi,

I had the same problem and tried different things looking up websites. Then I tried something really basic. Since I got sound except when playing things over the web, I clicked on sound in the taskbar, then clicked mixer and esured that the PCM volume was not low or muted. I increased the volume and voila sound!!! from you tube videos

These are all good suggestions. Also, in the mixer (KMix), you can go to settings and normally activate more channels, you may try that.

If you don;t use the onboard sound, I strongly suggest you disable it from the bios, it will make your life easier.

Also, a typical problem for no sound in things like Firefox, is that they don't talk to alsa, but to an older sound system (oss). Installing either pulse or alsa-oss may help in this situation. The latter solution is less invasive.

I am sure you'll get it sorted out

            Cheers!

Yes, I did. I noticed that I wasn't hearing the Kubuntu startup theme either, so I disabled the onboard sound in the bios and now all works.

              Thanks, all.
