Which version of Debian does 9.10 use?

Are we using Squeeze or Lenny?

Re: Which version of Debian does 9.10 use?

Neither (I believe). Ubuntu is a fork of the Debian project's code base. Ubuntu packages are based on packages from Debian's unstable branch (sid). Every package in Kubuntu shares the same repositories as Ubuntu.

Yes, till now (K)ubuntu was based on Debian Sid and Experimental packages, I read the next one will be based on "Testing" for more stability.

As the "Snowhog" told the Ubuntu is drawing sources from the Sid.

With the Karmic >Karmic Release Schedule, Plans, KDE 4.3 >> Karmic Release Schedule:
        June 25th > DebianImportFreeze

Prior to this date, new versions of packages will be automatically imported from Debian unstable where they have not been customized for Ubuntu, that is when the version number of the package in the current Ubuntu development branch does not contain the substring "ubuntu" and there is a newer version in Debian. Entirely new packages (those not in Ubuntu at all) are also automatically imported prior to this date. The import is done by copying the source package verbatim from Debian and building fresh binary packages on the Ubuntu autobuilders.

By this date, all packages that have been modified by both Debian and Ubuntu since the last merge should have been merged at least once in the current release cycle.

After this date, packages will only be imported from Debian in this way by explicit request from a developer. (If the package needs to be modified for Ubuntu, or is not in Debian, then a developer can of course also upload it directly.)

With the Lucid > Lucid Release Schedule, Plans, KDE 4.4 >> Lucid open for development:
...Because Lucid is an LTS, autosyncing will track the Debian testing series for this cycle, rather than
Debian unstable as we normally do...
        but
...If you believe a newer package version from unstable is needed for any reason, please don't hesitate to request a sync using the normal process...

I'm not entirely clear of how knowing that helps me. I'm trying to decide which of the sdlmame and sdlmess repositories I should use from this site.

There's one each for Etch, Lenny and Squeeze. I don't want to destabilize my current set up by choosing the wrong one. If it comes to it I'll try them in a virtual machine for a few days and see what happens but I don't want to have to re-install a VM if things go wrong.

Normally the packages that are newer (squeeze) will be more compatible -- there's no guarantee though. You can install, see if it needs any dependency if it works you are lucky, if not uninstall...

Did you try installing sdlmame from the official ubuntu repositories?

Adrian, I'll give it a shot. I've had another idea as well: I will install Debian in a VirtualBox and run them from there. It's not a perfect solution but it will let me get my retro fix.

Skunk, the sdlmame in our repo is out of date and mess is very out of date. I have installed sdlmame through a repo provided [ur=http://sdlmame.wallyweek.org/repository/l]here[/url] which works pretty well. The reason I'm looking at the other (Debian) repo is that it covers both sdlmess and sdlmame and sdlmess is the package I want to install most.

                Thank you, everybody, for helping

Hmmmmm -- I just checked the Debian package lists for both testing and unstable -- no packages by those names are listed. Possibly the correct answer to the original (title) question is, "It doesn't matter".

You could simply make a snapshot of the newly installed VM. If something goes wrong just roll back. I recommend Virtual Box by Sun.
