usb memory stick not working after updates

First off...I am very, very new with Linux, Kubuntu, the whole works. I am very impressed so far with the capabilities, but have very little knowledge as far as how things work. I installed 9.1 about a week ago and have been playing around. I thought my usb mem sticks were working then, but at some point they stopped working. Tonight, I reinstalled 9.1 and the usb mem stick worked up until I installed the updated packages (KPackageKit).

I think the system is still recognizing that a usb is being plugged in by the entries in the KSystemLog, which I attached below. But I am not getting the pop-up telling me that it is there, and it doesn't show up in the file managers (I tried all 3 supplied with Kubuntu).

Thank you for any help that you may be able to give.

    Install or reinstall usbautomount.

I was unable to find usbautomount. I did find usbmount and tried that, but it made no difference.

      Where would I find usbautomount?

      Thank you.

        My fault, sorry!

        The application is called "usbmount".

I blame it all on my 68 year old brain. It seems to be goofing off more often than usual.

I had this exact same problem last night. When I inserted my USB stick on KK it didn't show up in device notifier or anything even though it did show in dmesg. It appears the problem is related to an issue with HAL. I eventually stumbled on a thread that said to remove /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/20-storage-methods.fdi and then restart HAL and it should show up in device notifier and then you should be able to click on it and open it in dolphin. So, if you do:

          Code:
          sudo rm /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/20-storage-methods.fdi
          sudo restart hal
It should work. Interestingly, after doing this I then restored the fdi file and restarted HAL again and the USB key still shows up.

I rebooted with a mem stick inserted and it is working now. I can take it out and put it back in and it works. I also inserted a different one and it recognized that also. Wondering if I will always have to have a mem stick installed on boot-up in order to have it work properly?

Thanks for the replies. Am running the Kubuntu on an older Gateway, and getting closer to have the nerve to install it on a system I built last winter and giving Micro$oft the boot.

Thank you all very much. If I continue to have this problem on subsequent boot-ups without the mem stick installed, I will try removing then adding Hal.
