    'edit as root' missing from context menu

    I am sure there used to be an 'edit as root' option in the context menu of Dolphin but it doesn't seem to be there in karmic. Similarly an 'open terminal here' entry. Is there any way of getting these back?

    thanks

    Installing the appropriate Rog131 ppa deb from here for the context menu would probably be the easiest way to get those back. I personally wouldn't add his entire repo, since some other packages might get upgraded that you don't want to have changed... but you can decide that for yourself.

    Maybe if we say Rog131 a bunch of times he'll magically appear and confirm that this is what you want...

    Rog131 Rog131 Rog131 Rog131 Rog131 Rog131 Rog131 Rog131 Rog131 Rog131 Rog131 Rog131

    Or I suppose I can install it, which I just did... looks like what you want:

      Thanks for the reply. Looks like it would do what I want.

        This is the rootactions_servicemenu written by kubicle and conveniently packaged by Rog131. It is an outstanding addition to Dolphin or Konqueror.

          Great! I have a link to Rog's repo that I go to every time I update, upgrade or install. Did not see that. Gota have it! I'll get it!

            IMO Rog is doing a wonderful job with the ppa (and in keeping it up-to-date, thanks for that), it's the only ppa that I keep permanently enabled.

            I don't think it's likely to break anything, as the ppa seems to only (or mostly) house software that isn't available from the main repos. Of course, there should always be some consideration before enabling any "unofficial" repositories (permanently), but this certainly is one of the best.

            And thanks for the comments on the menu :P

                I usually just go there and download the debs and install that way. Make them portable to take to other machines. All though when you Google "Rog PPA" his repo shows up, so I really don't have to do that much any more.

                  To restore the "Open As Root" option under the "Actions" context menu (worked for me):

                  Paste the following code into a text file, and name it "OpenAsRoot.desktop" (or whatever):

                  Code:
                  [Desktop Action OpenAsRoot]
                  Exec=kdesu dolphin %U
                  Icon=folder-red
                  Name=Open as Root

                  [Desktop Entry]
                  Actions=OpenAsRoot
                  Icon=folder-red
                  ServiceTypes=KonqPopupMenu/Plugin,inode/directory,inode/directory-locked
                  Type=Service
                  Save the file to:

                  Code:
                   ~/.kde/share/kde4/services
                  Then close and re-open Dolphin, and you should have "Open As Root" as an option under "Actions" in the context menu.

                    That isn't exactly the same as "Edit as Root" was. Edit as Root was used to open text files in kate as root, while Open as Root opens directories in dolphin. Small edits to the desktop file would of course change that, if that is the functionality you need.

                      Doesn't the DEB package being mentioned here already have a good a majority of the Root Actions? The one I installed did. Made my experimentation with GRUB2 go a whole lot better!

                        It does, but I guess someone may want just a simple "Edit as Root" or "Open as Root" action, and not the whole shebang.

                          Indeed. I have both, for convenience - but generally use "Open As Root".

                            Agreed. Rog is great both here, and with [his] repo.
