kde partition manager 5min to start

I installed kde partition manager from the repos but it takes a very long time to start. I just timed it after booting with nothing else running and it took over five minutes. It doesn't show in top during this time.

Does anyone else have the same problem?

Yes. I decided to try it out yesterday and found the same thing. I can hear all of the hard drives on my desktop clicking, as though partition manager is reading and checking them. I did not time it, but it did take a long time.

      If you simply install
      gparted
      you'll be fine, no problems.
Better yet, use GParted Live CD for perfect results every time (it's the same as gparted but runs better as a live CD under various uses).

No problems? What fun would that be?

monte48lowes, well, you have a point there
          Besides, practicing TestDisk is fun.

Kparted on my 64b Karmic came up almost instantly.
            GParted works well, too.

Let me guess, you don't have a floppy drive?

I had this problem on one laptop, and when checking the logs, I noticed partitionmanager spent around 4 minutes trying to recognize /dev/fd0...which was rather strange as the laptop didn't have a floppy drive.

Easily circumvented by disabling floppy disk in the bios, though, after which partitionmanager had no problems starting up.

I did some digging and looks like an old libparted bug (which rears it's ugly head when floppy drive is enabled in bios and no physical drive present), and could probably affect gparted as well.

kubicle, you were right, it was the absent floppy and disabling it in the bios fixed the problem. When I read your post I thought I remembered reading something similar and there is a post about it on kdeapps page. There is also a bug open on it dating from February

                https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=185306

It looks a nice app and it is good to see that someone has done a qt4 frontend as the old qt3 qtparted seemed to get dropped.
