    I want all Codecs

    I want to be able to play every kind of media on my Linux. Is there a list of packages somewhere that I need to install in order to accomplish this?

      Also, VLC and/or MPlayer would come in handy for this. I've noticed that VLC handles certain video types, like FLV, better than the standard media players such as Dragon or Kaffeine.

      To be more specific on the Medibuntu subject, w32codecs, non-free-codecs, and libdvdcss2 should take care of mostly everything that the standard kubuntu-restricted-extras doesn't.

        thank you for the responses.

        So I installed these, but I still can't get sound out of my HD WMV files. I know they work in Windows, so it isn't the file. Any suggestions?

          If you install either VLC you should have no problem playing .wmv audio files.

            Such files play just fine for me with SMPlayer.

              Personally, I prefer VLC for the files that don't play in the standard programs, but then again, I would rather take a little bit of time to convert them to more compatible files with programs like OggConvert or Handbrake.

                smplayer did the same thing as the others(video with out audio), and VLC gave me this:

                "VLC does not support the audio or video format "wmap". unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this."

                of course the video still played without the audio.

                Is there some windows codec that doesn't exist in w64codecs?

                    yes most definitely. Its like they think their free downloads will make them less money if they have less people able to use them.... did these people back the methods of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD?(they contain a deep hatred for those who use linux)


                    I did notice that the packages kubuntu-restricted-extras and non-free-codecs are not marked as installed in kPackageKit
                    but apt-get install is performed it tells me that they have been installed and in the latest version.
                    it didn't seem like this would be a problem(since I trust apt-get over all others)

                      Yes, Windows media with DRM. Besides, Microsoft spends a lot of time to change their formats to break compatibility with non-Microsoft based computers. Not so long ago, WMV and WMA files wouldn't play at all on Linux.

                      *buntu-restricted-extras and non-free-codecs are meta packages, meaning it's just an easy way to install multiple packages with a single request. These packages themselves are not required to be installed once the relatated packages are installed.

                        ah well.

                        Funny story, not that it matters, but I seem to have posted this in the wrong OS.. I have Karmic. I was apparently browsing the Hardy forum, left my computer then came back to post a topic without checking which os I was under.

                          If you still have a Windows system capable of playing the file then there ought to be a way to decrypt or transcode it. For example, if VLC on Window can play the file then you have a way. VLC can transcode any file it can play. No guarantees though, it's just a shot in the dark.
