Re: wine
Both version of wine have been working for me on karmic, however I only run one non-graphics intensive game, so it might not cause the issues you are having. Good luck to you.
(I only mention this to let you know that there isn't a karmic bug that is preventing wine from running... sorry I couldn't be more helpful.)

Re: wine
I found that CodeWeaver's CrossOver works very well with a LOT of WIndows apps, and is a lot better than WINE. One nice thing about it is that it keeps each app in its own "WINE bottle".
If you have an XP install CD around then a better solution, except for games and HIRES graphics is to install XP as a VM guest OS."A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.”

And more to the point, you didn't supply any workstation information, such as graphics card, driver etc. that might be more helpful in determining your issue, so what exactly did you expect to see in the thread?

Re: wine
Also note that wine is a constantly moving target as they add and fix things, as well as deal with the changes in windows and windows apps as well. Wine is getting better, but it will never be a perfect works-100% thing.
For this reason, I suggest checking out wine hq, and their app database for app-specific help
