    Is my installation different?

    Hi there,

I've always used Ubuntu on my laptop but had to use Windows 7 for a wile. Now I wanted to test Kubuntu, because of the slick looks and it looked promising. I've used the Live CD but then my wireless wouldn't work could not even find the way to configure it. The only settings page I get is the System setting, something like configuration panel in Windows. But that panel was rather empty.

I have installed Kubuntu 2 day's ago to see if there would be any changes considering the empty config pannel. But no, there ain't.

I am starting to think that I am a !@ noob but I can't find anything, and when I try to load kcontrol (trough the search field on main menu) it saids that the program is unknown. Even when I try to launch it in the konsole.

Ther is letterly no place where I can get a overview of installed hardware, and wireless settings.

Did I get a !@up image or something?

    I don't understand, do you?

Any help would be appreciated, tnx

    Re: Is my installation different?

Have you tried this from the Karmic Network Support forum http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3107727.0 ?
I would add to it at the end to install wicd instead of the default network manager with instructions in the last post in the thread http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3107388.0
Kubuntu 16.04 on two computers and Kubuntu 17.04 on DELL Latitude 13

In the first topic they said that you have to look for hardware drivers, I did and ony my TV card and video card was recognised. So that didn't help. The second topic said that I should try wicd, so I installed it but it still can't find my hidden network (SSID). It's weird, it asked for a ESSID, don't know what this is (ad-hoc?) is that something like a repeating network?

      Tnx for the reply btw

That is correct - your WAP (Wireless Access Point) is 'hidden' - not broadcast so it can be seen. WICD or any other network manager can't see hidden WAPs. That is why you are prompted to provide the ESSID - your WAP name and the passkey.

This is normal behavior for connecting to a hidden WAP.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Oh ok, thanks for the explanation

So ESSID is the 'name' of hidden accespoints, I only knew SSID.

I am sorry to inform but I installed Ubuntu again, I just couldn't figure out why nothing was working. Now with Ubuntu everything is working like a charm. Realy weird.
