Can't get DVD's to play with 9.10 Kubuntu

I've read and re-read the posts but still can't figure out my problem.....
I've followed the procedure on Mediabuntu.org but still can't get DVD's to work.
I've tried on 3 different systems and different media players but get the same results.
It appears that libdvdcss... isn't working.
I get a message that states:
    Playback failure:
VLC cannot set the DVD's title. It possibly cannot decrypt the entire disc.
    Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///dev/sr0'. Check the log for details.

Again, I've tried on a Ubuntu 9.10 virtual system and two seperate Kubuntu physical systems with 9.10.
I've tried VLC, kaffeine, and a few others. All have the same symptoms.
I've followed the instructions closely from Mediabuntu site. The install seems to go OK, but still doesn't work.
I've also tried removing and reinstalling LIBDVDCSS still no lucck.
Anyone else haveing these problems or know of a fix?

I finally managed to get Amarok to play a CD which it did for about 30 secs and then crashed.

Libdvdcss - Are you sure that is correct? I thought it was libdvdcss2.

Yes, my mistake libdvdcss2 is installed per the instructions in mediabuntu.

Not playing encrypted DVDs. Anyone else having these problems? Seems strange that I've experienced this on three seperate systems.

                Hi
                You could try

                sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 libdvdread4 libdvdnav4 vlc

This straight from the multimedia how to over at the Ubuntu forum ...take a look. Never had a problem playing encrypted DVD's using this guide.
Maybe you could go through it from the beginning

Re: Can't get DVD's to play with 9.10 Kubuntu

I had this problem until 30 mins ago.

Basically, every release from 7.04 onwards the method I have used is to first install libdvdread3 - now libdvdread4.

Then add the medibuntu repo to the list and then install libdvdcss2, w32codecs and then finally libxine1-plugins.

This has always worked first time with earlier versions but not with 9.1

Kaffeine did not want to know so I tried Dragon - no luck except it popped up a box saying to download the following plugins, no file names as such just "mpeg libraries" or similar. I did not look too closely but thought Why Not ? and clicked yes.

It downloaded something - no details given - and guess what - DVDs now play in both Kaffeine & Dragon.

The only odd thing is that in the past, installing w32codecs and xine plugins etc has meant that Rhythmbox and Amarok would then play mp3 files. This has not happened this time so maybe the first installation of the codecs went wrong although the files are on my system.

If I sort it out, I will report back but try the above - it may work

Re: Can't get DVD's to play with 9.10 Kubuntu

Sounds as if the libdvdnav4 might have been downloaded 'manually' - a separate .deb file downloaded not via any package manger. That's a guess on my part. But ....

                        I'd test purging the package:
                        Code:
                        sudo apt-get purge --simulate libdvdnav4
If the output doesn't look like it would remove critical parts of the system (not likely), then do it for real:
                        Code:
                        sudo apt-get purge libdvdnav4
                        When completed, reinstall with:
                        Code:
                        sudo apt-get install libdvdnav4
Alternatively, you can try manually installing the package. First, you need to locate it. Open a console and type:
                        Code:
                        sudo updatedb
                        When it finishes, type:
                        Code:
                        sudo locate libdvdnav4
Note the path that points to the .deb package. CD to the packages location and they type:
                        Code:
                        sudo dpkg -i name_of_the_package.deb
where name_of_the_package is the name of the package without the trailing version information.
                        Example:
                        grub_0.97-29ubuntu53_i386.deb
                        Code:
                        sudo dpkg -i grub
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

How are you playing the DVD ? are clicking on the folder with the TS file and asking for it to be opened with VLC and does this happen with all DVD's ? I have the exact message in terminal when installing :

                            sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 libdvdread4 libdvdnav4 vlc

Re: Can't get DVD's to play with 9.10 Kubuntu

I'm not at my Linux machines right now, so this is from memory.

VLC fails when I open a disc. I've tried a couple of DVDs that I know are good. VLC recogonizes and displays the title, just fails when trying to play. I've tried several of the other movie players in Kubuntu and Ubuntu. I can browse the contents DVD using Dolphin without problems.

Nothing seems to work. VLC seems to give the most descriptive error.

Again, the strange thing here is that I followed the instructions in mediabuntu. I've tried this on Ubuntu & kubuntu on 2 seperate physical systems as well as at least 3 virtual systems, VM and Virtual Box. The symptoms are the same. It appears that the DVDs remain encrypted. If I hadn't tried it so often on different physical and virtual systems I would expect it to be a hardware thing.

If this is reproducable on my systems, I can't imagine it not affecting lots of others too. Its confusing. Its frustrating. Anyone have any ideas? Anyone else having problems playing DVDs?
