karmic cannot read data DVDs

Hi.

I need some help with Kubuntu Karmic. The problem is described as a bug:

Weird. Sorry I don't have Karmic on a physical machine right now to try this. It would definitely impede my own work.

Have you tried swapping in a new DVD drive? I know you said the discs work in Windows, but some optical drives are very finicky about media and drivers, and sometimes the drives themselves die slowly and in strange ways. A different DVD drive would help eliminate the possibility of hardware failure.
