And as a QA person I very much disagree that "everyone must experience it" before it's a bug. I'm surrounded by developers who never see 90% of the bugs I find and report.

We're like that ... subconsciously know how to avoid them! Like smokers who don't realize how many cigarettes they are smoking at the same time. In proprietary houses folks are paid to test software. In OpenSource folks volunteer to test software. Volunteer development, volunteer testing, and the GPL is why open source software is free.

I wonder why not everybody has seen this problem, because to test I just took a ISO with Karmic (64 bit, if that's relevant) and installed it in a VirtuaBox machine, although I know there are upgrades and I run "aptitude update" there was no notification (even after "aptitude update" showed that there are updates available).... this would be easy to replicate by anybody.

I don't agree there's no issue. I checked through all the cron jobs and went through each script to see what it does and my conclusion is that while the check for updates process is working correctly, what isn't working correctly is the subsequent notification that should appear.

ALL the script for flashing the icon in the system tray is in the /etc/cron.daily/apt script. The code snippets that I posted in my explanation were taken from the section of the script that does what you say doesn't work -- put an icon (KPackageKitsmarticon) iin the system tray.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that kpackagekitsmarticon is the KDE4 service. You should see it running with System Monitor.

I saw the update icon flashing whenever apt is refresh its cache. The problem is the icon only flash for a brief second when refreshing cache. However, it will disappear from the tray regardless of whether there are new updates or not.

for me it SEAMS to be working fine BUT the next time I see it I'll check what it has to offer then close Kpackagekit and check with apt-get and see if thars a diference?

I'm also set to KDE notifacation!

ok so I got a notifacation of 6 bug fix updates about a hower or so ago in the notifacation and jobs system tray icon (compleat with the cute ladey bug icon for bugs in the popup window) clicked the button to open Kpackagekit and checked what thay were and closed Kpackagekit.

then went to the konsole and did the apt-get update && apt-get upgrade thing and it shows the same updates... typed n and enter and then changed it to dist-upgrade ....and still the same.

so it would seam it's geting whatever is avalabel just fine

for me eneyway.

About an hour ago I, too, got a notification of a couple bug fixes and 16 updates. KpackageKit installed them just fine.

Do you run 64bit version?

As I said I tired that with a clean install in a virtual machine and didn't see any upgrades.

Can anybody try to replicate this, install Kubuntu Karmic (64 bit is the one I tried) in a virtual machine, don't do any changes and see if you get the notification.

Yes, I run the 64b Kubuntu Karmic, but its real, not virtual.

Can running Kubuntu in a VM block the notifier? Good question.

My first thought is that the VM connects to the web via the host, but as far as it can tell its connection is directly to the web. So, my suspicions are that running Kubuntu as guest should NOT affect software update notifications.

No, I run it on harddisk too, but I also tried it on VM so I will have a clean install to test. I don't get notification in neither instances on hard or VM.

I've gotten no notification whatsoever. But since you guys mentioned I opened Kpackagekit and there were 3 updates waiting. I didn't even have to click refresh, I just switched to the "Software Updates" "tab". My notifications are definitely not working. Checking the /var/lib/apt/periodic directory the check for updates happened this morning, but I still haven't seen a notification:

Just to be sure... everyone who is not getting update notifications open KPackageKit, click on the settings icon, and in the right panel make sure the box marked "Notify when updates are available" is CHECKED.

Look, here's a snapshot (hopefully it will load), it clearly shows KPackageKit with updates detected and also the system tray with no notification -- this is from a clean install.
