Not sure if it's the same problem, but go to the Akonadi config where it fails to start, and then click on the "Akonadi Server Configuration" tab. Near the bottom, click "Start". It will be next to "Restart".

If it still does not start, then try this:

    Code:
    akonadictl start
    in a konsole.

I just put that command as one of my autostart programs, since Akonadi refuses to start on it's own.

      Re: Akonadi not operational

I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10. This akonadi problem seems to be widespread with no real solutions offered. I can add a little info, but I don't have a cure. When I try to run /usr/sbin/mysqld-akonadi from the command line, I get the following:

      091102 21:05:09 [Warning] Can't create test file /var/lib/mysql/serenity.lower-test
      091102 21:05:09 [Warning] Can't create test file /var/lib/mysql/serenity.lower-test
091102 21:05:09 [Note] Plugin 'FEDERATED' is disabled.
      /usr/sbin/mysqld-akonadi: Table 'mysql.plugin' doesn't exist
091102 21:05:09 [ERROR] Can't open the mysql.plugin table. Please run mysql_upgrade to create it.
091102 21:05:09 InnoDB: Operating system error number 13 in a file operation.
InnoDB: The error means mysqld does not have the access rights to
      InnoDB: the directory.
      InnoDB: File name ./ibdata1
      InnoDB: File operation call: 'open'.
      InnoDB: Cannot continue operation.

There's something seriously horked here, and I don't see Canonical stepping up to fix it - or even acknowledge it. I've also had lots of other stuff just die randomly - possibly related to this. Things like "Sorry, the program kwin closed unexpectedly" or "Sorry, the program kde-apport closed unexpectedly" or "Sorry, the program...." Pretty much just everything dying randomly all over the place. Overall, Karmic is a complete disaster. I swear, it really pisses me off when vendors release crap just to stay on schedule. Argh!

Awesome it started up with that.

I was wondering how you added the command to autostart. Or I guess what file do I need to sudo kate and add it to?

In the 'Advanced' tab in System Settings, simply click Autostart, then click the 'Add Program...' button. The very top text bar on the pop-up window is what you type the command into. Simple as that.

          Edit1:

Well, I don't know about you, but Karmic has been the smooooothest Linux experience I've ever had. Minor problems like this... Very minor. I've had a few programs crash... When I close out of them on purpose, and it somehow thinks it was a crash. Whatever that's supposed to mean. I closed the X, clicked on File > Quit, whatever...

Occasionally Plasma dies on me, very rarely. It always restarts almost immediately. Sometimes the display becomes inactive, and I switch to a TTY (I use Ctrl+Alt+F6 usually) then back (Ctrl+Alt+F7).

Finally, everything works. Nepomuk works fine (just not strigi, which I'd likely never use anyway... Just love to tweak my desktop to perfection), and even sleep mode finally works (a first for me with Linux). It seems rock solid for my purposes, with no graphical glitches despite having an nVidia graphics card (I point to the issues with nVidia cards we had before).

So, you're the exception and not the rule.

Edit2: Note: I had a fresh install with the new ext4, instead of a web upgrade with the old ext3. If you 'upgraded', you may not have as smooth an experience, and I wouldn't be able to judge if it's the norm or not.

I also have a fresh install with ext4 and my problems seem to be knowledge based more then anything. If you are having that much trouble then perhaps a reinstall in order, or maybe various packets need to be reinstalled. Thus far, I have noticed that my desktop environment is running faster and smoother then before. I most definitely did not get to this point without adversity. I tried to update initially , and that screwed up hardcore. I did a fresh install, then managed to break it twice, both of which I fixed by reinstalling kubuntu-desktop.

Heh... Because I had KDE 3.5.x installed on Jaunty, it just plain wouldn't LET me upgrade. I tried.

Meh, fresh install is better anyway. I had an external 1TB hard drive to back up my home folder on anyway.
