    Speed

    Hi,
I upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic beta a few weeks ago. The main thing I was impressed by was the speed or "responsiveness" of the desktop. With Jaunty something just wasn't right. The desktop felt sluggish, and compositing would frequently be suspended. The update to Karmic seemed like it fixed all that. The desktop was snapping, compositing was solid and stable, it was great!

The only problem is that now I'm getting the old sluggishness again. As before, top or system monitor doesn't show anything hogging memory or cpu. But something is not right.

Any thoughts or suggestions about where to look to try and figure out what's wrong will be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Ista

    Re: Speed

Perceptions of "sluggishness" typically arise from sub-optimal video performance, so that is where I would start looking for something not quite optimal. If you're saying it flies spectacularly in Live CD mode, but somehow started dragging after installation, maybe you should boot the Live CD again and look over the video driver configuration in that mode, with comparison to your installed setup.

If you are running a Intel GPU, then you need to review this:

If it is Nvidia or ATI, then you probably need to do a little searching/researching on which driver version provides best performance for your platform.

That's the best advice I can give without a lot more specifics.

Of course, for overall Linux system speed tweaking, there are other things that can be done, including these:

But the changes in performance from that kind of stuff are not going to be dramatic.

Thanks dibl. No, I'm not talking about differences between live cd and installed, but between Karmic beta and Karmic RC. I'm guessing something was "turned on" in the release that was disabled in the beta (of course this is just a complete guess. It may have been something I did).
