    KDE4 desktop tutorials / howtos / documentation

    Hi,

Could you all give some links to the best KDE4 documentation resources? Tutorials? Howtos?

I looked at the mot likely place and those are good places to start:
    http://www.kde.org/announcements/4.3/
    http://www.kde.org/announcements/4.2/
    http://www.kde.org/announcements/4.2/guide.php

However, KDE4 is so powerful and feature rich that there must be other places where more documentation is provided.

    Why am I asking?

I am a brand new KDE4 user. Up to last week, I have been exclusively using KDE3. I LOVE KDE4! The developers have done a great job! Many thanks to them.

However, I am still a bit lost and struggle to find where such and such settings are situated.

    Questions I have are:

On one user account, somehow, somewhere, I configured the windows to overlap the taskbar at the bottom. I'd like to reverse the setting, but I looked everywhere I could think of and didn't find how to undo this.

Also, since KDE4.3, according to the announcement linked above, we can have different widgets on different desktop (I have 4) but the announcement does not actually say how to achieve this.

I also recall a way to zoom in and out of the desktop, but I can't find anymore how I did it.

    ...

What good wiki do you know of that could answer such questions?

    Thanks and many blessings,

A very happy long term Linux / KDE user.

I've noticed that most all-around-tutorials age rather quickly (because KDE4 is still evolving rather rapidly), I'm sure good "complete guides" will pop up once the UI stabilizes.

      1. Unlock widgets (if locked)
      2. Click the plasma icon (cashew) in the panel to open the panel configuration bar
      3. Click 'Advanded' and choose 'Always visible'

I also recall a way to zoom in and out of the desktop, but I can't find anymore how I did it
This action should be available by clicking the plasma icon on the desktop and choosing 'zoom out' (you can also set a keyboard shortcut for it)

In kde 4.3, 'Zoom out' from the desktop, and you should see a menu with an option 'Configure Plasma'. (In kde 4.4, this setting will be available in SystemSettings, for easier discoveribility)

Yes, quite a few of the links above are related to KDE3 only.

Yes, that's it! It was well hidden.

I struggled with this one, but since you said it was there, I kept trying..... until I figured out that I was always right-clicking, and that I got different results by left-clicking.
But then, once zoomed out, I couldn't zoom back in again. I saw the zoom out button and clicked it once more.... that's when I started to panic. I kept turning my 'cube' around to see if I missed a dialog box somewhere. But then I found out that the zoom in button was situated way apart from the zoom out button, when I expected to find it next to it. That certainly is a UI bug. Should I report it in bugs.kde.org ?

In any case, I am sorted out, thanks to you, I found my way to doing things I wanted to do. Thanks.

Thanks, I found it with your help. It's good it'll be in a more obvious place in KDE4.4.

        Thanks again for your help.

There is a separate zoom in button for every 'activity' because the UI needs to know which activity you would like to zoom in to.

But I agree that zoom in/out functionality is one part of KDE4 UI that is still a bit raw usability wise (but I'm sure it'll improve over time). That's why I'd recommend using the 'Activity Bar' widget for switching activities if you're a mouse oriented user, and setting keyboard shortcuts for activity switching if you prefer the keyboard (like me).
