gtk file selection box freezes, maxing cpu

This is a strange problem, and it's been going on for a few weeks now.
In gtk applications, when the file open box appears, either for saving or loading files, the whole application freezes. This is a quad cpu system, and gkrellm shows one of the cpus being pegged at 100%. Eventually it drops out, and the selection box works. This happens in gimp and firefox; OOo seems to be using a different file selection box, that does not have this problem.
More of an annoyance than anything else, but it shouldn't be doing that. Anyone else notice this?
