I'm noticing some lag in Konqueror and Firefox

I will not call my testing scientific but I'm definitely observing some lag in the web browsers on my 9.10 machine, a new Mac laptop with a Broadcom card. I have two laptops connected to the same router, one wireless (9.04 with an Intel Pro Wireless in a Thinkpad T61) and the Mac running an updated 9.10 connected on the wired connection. I tested www.kubuntu.org load times in both environments: Firefox 3.0.14 in 9.04; Firefox 3.5 in 9.10. The page load in 9.04 was immediate. In 9.10 the initial page load took about 5 seconds. No errors, just a serious lag on the initial page load. I disabled ufw so that's not the problem.

Using cache on one and not the other? Sorry, but had to ask 'the obvious' as sometimes, the obvious isn't.

      Ha ha.

I don't think the problem is caching. It's reproducible even after a restart. I also removed the network managers from the equation. I had WICD installed but it's not finding any wireless networks at this point so I configured my network in /etc/network/interfaces and got rid of WICD. Still seeing a lag in the browsers and possibly command-line too. What I notice is when I jump to a new domain I observe the lag but not all the time and nslookup from the command-line is fast. I was also streaming music so the connection is good. Yahoo and Google seem to load pretty fast all the time as well. It's kind of odd behavior but not isolated to any one site. Also, after the initial Kubuntu home page loads subsequent pages in the same domain are fast. I'm still testing so I might have more info later.

I decided to stick with Konqueror for testing. I cleared the cache, history and cookies on each version. I would estimate 9.10 took about 5 times the 9.04 load time to render www.kubuntu.org. After that, I clicked on Community and Support link. Load time was fast. Then Kubuntu Forums link. Load time was slow. Logged in to my account. Login was a little sluggish too. Loading the forum index page was fast and navigating the forums is fast. If I kill the browser and start over I experience the same behavior.

Had you disabled ipv6 in the 9.04 installs?

In Firefox, use about:config and then filter on ipv6 and see if the disable setting is true or false.

I'll double check if I ever disabled ipV6 lookups in 9.04. I have not booted 9.04 since I switched to 9.10 last week. I had some odd regressions in 9.10 that may be unrelated. My VPN also stopped working from Karmic until I upgraded my router firmware. Apparently my firmware version had a DNS bug lurking. Disabling ipv6 in Firefox helped my case quite a bit. I'd prefer not to leave it disabled.
