[Updated] First run of the Koala

Greetings fellow penguins.

Installed the beta, loved it so far,found it more responsive and quick than the 9.04

Have some points that I'd like to share.

- How do I get rid of the cashew? Please, have mercy tell me how I get rid of the fecking cashew, the view of it repulses me deeply.

- No video playback at all. I installed the restricted but all I have is the frame of the player and the sound of the video and inside a trasparent layer or a black layer ( depends if composite is or is not running )

- Microblogging widget doesn't work completely . I can update my twitter but I cannot receive any updates, the widget remains transparent with the button "configure" in the middle.

- Amarok worked out of the box, but when I go to magnatune I get a strange thing ( do not even know if I can classify it as bug) if I class the artists by name, all the discs are mixed up and I have Ehren Starks ( for example) playing electronic instead of Jazz ^_^

Issue disappears as soon I reclass the albums by gender.

That is what I have so far and I'm overly happy to report that three out of four are mere paper cuts. that said I'm intrigued about the video play back issue, anyone has found the same?

Okay, two more

-Widgets on screen do not hold the posistion and after a reboot disappear from screen and have to be reset anew

- Kpackagekit does not have root privileges and even if you open a terminal and launch it with Sudo cannot update the system

I have always used the "comprehensive multimedia & video how to " from the ubuntu forum and it has never failed even on Karmic as an alpha.

Usage: Add the plasmoid to the desktop - cashew's gone. Remove the plasmoid - chashew reappears.

Binaries can be found from the PPA repositories (> FAQ: Repositories) > Package name contains: cashew

What kind of hardware/drivers do you have ?
What player are you using ?
Are there errors if you launch your favorite player through the konsole ?
Some of the players have video output settings. Default settings may conflict with your hardware/drivers.

From the > SMPlayer FAQ:

Output drivers (directx, xv, x11, gl, alsa, oss...) what are they? Which one is the best?

MPlayer has several output drivers, for video and sound. SMPlayer allows you to select the one you want among all of them (Preferences -> General -> Video/Audio).

For video it's recommended that you use xv (linux) or directx (windows). They use hardware acceleration and give the best performance. The inconvenience about directx for Windows Vista users is that it disables Aero.

x11 and directx:noaccel are drivers without hardware acceleration. They give the worst performance. Moreover directx:noaccel gives a bad quality in fullscreen mode.

gl and gl2 will use 3D acceleration from the graphic card. They will give better performance than directx:noaccel and x11 but no so much as directx or xv. gl/gl2 can be useful for Windows Vista users.

For sound, you should usually use oss or alsa in linux. I don't like esd or arts, they use to use more CPU.

In windows the sound drivers are dsound and win32. I read that dsound can cause sometimes audio-video sync problems. If you notice that problem try win32 instead.

Other drivers allows you to save the video as image files or write the sound to the disk. These drivers are not officially supported by SMPlayer. Use them only if you know what you're doing.

With the VLC: Tools > Preferences > Video > Output...
