    [solved] karmic dvd playback broken?

Crossposted from Ubuntu forums - maybe I can get some help here

I've tried every readme I could get my hands on. Here are the errors I get -

kaffeine - Cannot find input plugin for MRL [dvd:/]

VLC - VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///dev/sr0'.

xine - there is no input plugin to handle dvd:/

kubuntu-restricted-extras is installed as is libdvdcss2. Anybody got any ideas?

    thanks -

Kubuntu 9.10 is not giving me any problems with DVDs.

Is your DVD player being recognized?

Open K3b and see if it recognizes your DVD.

Yup. I'm trying to play the DVD I just burned

Commercial DVDs work not at all either. I've only enabled DVD playback on *buntu machines about a billion times but this one's got me stumped.

        Re: karmic dvd playback broken?

Do you have more than one CD/DVD device ?

Sometimes the 'buntu get confused when there are more than one device (sr0/sr1)

        What tells:
        Code:
        ls -l /dev/dvd*
Is it same as with the:
        Code:
        sudo lshw
        man lshw
        NAME
        lshw - list hardware

        DESCRIPTION

lshw is a small tool to extract detailed information on the hardware configuration of the machine.
It can report exact memory configuration, firmware version, mainboard configuration, CPU version
and speed, cache configuration, bus speed, etc. on DMI-capable x86 or IA-64 systems and on some PowerPC machines (PowerMac G4 is known to work).

Had identical DVDs in both drives. Neither sr0 or sr1 will play.

Interestingly, everything got fixed with last night's update.

Re: [solved] karmic dvd playback broken?

Unfortuantely, I am still having problems with commercial DVD playback and am still getting the following error.

                Code:
Cannot find input plugin for MRL [dvd:/]
Even with all the most recent updates.

                Outputs from

                Code:
                ls -l /dev/dvd*
                Code:
                sudo lshw
                Are consistent.

Also I have the relevant libdvd* packages installed.

Any further suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: [solved] karmic dvd playback broken?

Works again now. But everything has pixel noise, whether from DVD or video files, and whether in Kaffeine or MPlayer.
