So, now to boot into the new kernel, re-install the nVidia driver, and ... who knows? ... maybe even get back online and confirm that it works!

"Mike! Grub 2 (1.96) is now Grub 2 (1.97) -- maybe some bugs fixed?"

    Hope so!

Well, as you know, I (finally) started to play with Grub 2, gonna write up some sort of how-to sometime soon (next 2-3 months). I don't see any updates offered yet through 8.04.3 repository, still 1.96, still some bugs.

Grub 2 is different, of course, from Grub Legacy, but, actually, it doesn't look too complicated. Simple in many respects: the config file is generated by other files, and I really like the OS prober thinger. What we got to hope for is that the thing works very well because manually editing grub.cfg doesn't make too much sense (except possibly for 100% custom boot menus or dedicated Grub partitions). We gotta rely on solid /etc/grub.d scripts. Also, finally, a good reason for someone to come up with a GUI that fully works so new people have a tool they can use without chmod-ing themselves nuts and otherwise into x-ville. We also gotta hope for one helluva good intro explanatory Manual from the devs so we are not left with a default choice of experimental inductive conclusions about how it works. But, thus far, assuming it is debugged & ready by release date, it looks fairly straightforward, clean, elegant.

Thanks for your update, dibl! Nice work. I'm trying to steal an hour or two every day to look at this stuff ... we'll see how that goes!

      Events

      * 2009-08-30 GRUB 1.97~beta1 was released. For now you have to get it with SVN: svn://svn.sv.gnu.org/grub/tags/release_1_97~beta1

      That explains that!
