[solved] Kernel 2.6.31 - good and bad

Bad news: NVIDIA drivers won't compile, and this time it has nothing to do with gcc. Seems this is going to need an update from NVIDIA to fix.

Good news: Creatvie x-fi driver support!

sudo modprobe ctxfi

And your x-fi card is now listed in the multimedia sound and video configuration, and it works.

As of yet, there appears to be no way of adjusting the crystallizer or cmdss functions, nor are there separate controls for 3d sound, but this is a start.

Get the text-file version, rather than copying and pasting from the post. (Tried it, didn't work.)

So far my biggest problem is that WIFI seems broken.

Correction, the new kernel seems to disable my wireless by default.

Pressing the Wireless button turns it on. I DO still have to use gnome's nm-applet, as KDE's still seems broken as of 4.3 RC1, but wireless is up and working with the new kernel.
