    Karmic Window Decorations

    Hi all,
    Just a few thoughts really.

I do hope that in Karmic there will be a new default window decoration created.

In Jaunty the taskbar, launcher and desktop all looked beautiful. Then you open a window :/

What happened?! In KDE3 windows looked fine, KDE4 comes along and they look like Windows NT!

It would be really cool if the Kubuntu team made a nice default window decoration that looks a bit better than grey grey grey.

It's not even just the window title bar at the very top of the window, in Dolphin or Konqueror the whole top half of the windows above the actual window contents is just grey with nothing separating the tabs, navigation bar or file menu. It looks terribad.

Also, the fonts look terrible in these top halves of the windows. Under Gnome, they look fine with Nautilus.

Try going on a website with form fields too, they render way too small so that you have to be a digital ninja to get the cursor to click in the fields without using the tab key.

I really want to switch to Kubuntu from Ubuntu but the fact that my desktop looks futuristic until I open a window and then it drops 20 years just prevents me.

I know that these things are however the KDE team made them, but surely until they fix them, the super Kubuntu team could design a theme that is as beautiful as the taskbar and desktop?

Again I know it is Gnome, but take a look at what Sun created for their OpenSolaris distro, "Nimbus". Now that is what a user wants to see when they load up their new OS, a fabulous looking desktop without editing hundreds of options just to get it to look nice!

But seriously, please consider it and you'd get more people making the switch!

    Much love, Soggy.

I cannot disagree -- kwin just isn't my cup of tea.

However, it was a pleasant surprise to find Emerald back in the *buntu repo -- I'm not sure where it's been hiding. It was not available when JJ was released, AFAIK, but it popped up a couple of weeks ago. So, I'm running JJ with compiz and good old Emerald window decorations.

I didn't realise it was there either, thanks for the tip though!

Emerald all the way for me until KWIN decorations look less fail.

      Thanks! Soggy.

Yeah, I had a hard time making kwin look right. I installed the bespin theme, and have been very happy with it.

dibl - how does compiz work in KDE? Or are you just using Emerald, and the native desktop effects...I loved some of the emerald themes, but since switching to KDE, I haven't installed compiz...just not sure how that all works together...thanks!

            Here -- see for yourself:

            http://www.kubuntuforums.net/index.p...o_show&ida=249

Actually compiz startup could be smoother -- the Fusion Icon doesn't seem to work right, so I have to start compiz with
            Code:
            compiz --replace
in the Konsole after booting. But, then it remembers that Emerald is set to be the window decoration, and all the settings in CCSM, so everything works fine from that point on.

              Few thoughts:

              1) Defaults are like...

              Defaults are like..... Blenders.
You need at least one, but you're not quite sure why.

              Defaults are like..... Horoscopes.
They always tell you what to do and are usually wrong.

              Defaults are like..... Snowflakes
They'll all melt when they land on your computer.

              2) It is quite easy to customize the look and feel of your Kubuntu desktop by individually controlling different parts of the visual appearance... (CustomizeKubuntu)

With the KDE 4.3 decorations are
as themeable as the Plasma desktop shell. Decoration and buttons are SVG files.
              (Aurorae Theme Engine)

The Aurorae is in the Karmic repositories: kwin-style-aurorae

... changing the colors... and the windows aren't grey

In the Pipe (experimental) > QuantumStyle
              Description:
QuantumStyle is an SVG themable style for Qt 4 and KDE.

                Re: Karmic Window Decorations

In addition to Aurorae, there are other (very configurable) window decorations available from the repos, just search for 'kwin-style'.
