    This driver is active but not currently in use (solved)

    first of all:
    WARNING: Do not install "linux-backports-modules-karmic" package if wireless is working well before installing that package..cause after installing linux-bacport-module-karmic wireless will stop working.
    even drivers are not properly uninstalled later on.. which causes problem in installing drivers again.

    ok.. now.. i simply wanted to reinstall the driver.
    1st step: i "removed" a driver using hardware drivers utility of kubuntu. and restared computer
    2nd step: i wanted to install the driver again.. but there was green icon besides it.. and at bottom it said:
    This driver is active but not currently in use
    i searched on net.. but could not find solution.

    if kubuntu knows that driver is active and not in use... how can i make it in use?

    In the taskbar find the Internet icon, rightclick it and open Edit Connections. Add your information there and apply, you may need to reboot.

      I am using knetworkmanager. it has Manage Connection option..
      but i cannot add wireless connection since wireless is not recognised by the system.

        Check your Hardware Drivers again. The driver that should be active is the Broadcom STA driver, not the other one.

          nope.. it is selected by default.. no matter how many times i inactive that.. but still it remains active and not in use
          i am attaching the snapshots.. the first one is when i inactivate the driver.. the application freezes i guess.. and second..when i reboot.

            Open terminal and type in the following (without the quotes) : "sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter" You will be asked for your password of course. This command looks into your wifi card and "cuts" the proper driver from it and installs it. Then reboot and see if it makes a difference.

              @bobcollard:thanks...b43-fwcutter installed by itself..
              but still could not start wireless.

              this issue was eating my lots of time.. so i reinstalled kubuntu
              and now wireless is working.
              only.. it is not connected to my wireless router automatically when i start the comp.
              at startup.. it shows disconnected wire icon.. when i click on it.. it shows my wireless router
              "Triband" having full strength signal. and i have to click on it.. in order to connect to internet

                Right click your icon in the task bar, go to Wireless and Edit your entry. Be sure to check Auto Startup.

                  @bobcollard: thanks for the suggestion.
                  though Auto Startup was selected it was not getting connected with bootup.

                  though i got the solution.
                  When i reinstall kubuntu.. those settings were on /home drive which was not formatted.
                  KNetworkManager tried to use the settings saved on /home.. but somehow could not.

                  i just had to delete those previous connections and recreate the connection.
                  click on Auto Startup. and now connection works automatically with bootup.
