[solved]Printing over the LAN

I am trying to print to a lexmark printer which is connected (via USB) to a Windows server (2003) that is on same the LAN as my computer.

Using CUPS etc it worked perfectly in 9.04. Now it cant seem to see the printer at all.

I am using SAMBA shares to connect to the printer. smb://server1/lexmark232e

I can see the server and browse the folders (using a browser or Dolphin) no problem using SAMBA. But cant print.

From the sketchy info given I can only assume that the problem is server side.

have you added the printer to the kubuntu machines list of printers?

under system settings-> printer configuration.

first try to add the printer as it if you can find it in the list. if not either try Raw Queue printer or use a search engine to find a ppd file for your printer...

Cant even see the printer. I expected to see a list of computers and any printers hanging off these - as in WIndows when you try to connect to a printer that is off a another workstation.

Following the network wizard, I start by saying that I want to Add a new network printer. I type in SMB path thus: //SERVER1/Lexmark E232 and tick the box which asks to be prompted if authentication is required.
It then allows me to goes through the wizard and after selecting Generic, PCL 5, CUPS (as I did before when I had 9.04) it then shows the printer as a local printer and accepts print test jobs. But you cant print to it at all. So it is not detecting it over the LAN. But I can connect to the server that this printer is hanging off and browse all the folders etc using Dolphin and the browser.

What about just smb:// in konqueror? Can't you navigate to it? Are you absolutely certain that it is published server side? Can you see it from other computers?

In Konqueror, when I do smb://server1/lexmark e232, it says no such folder

But I can navigate to //server1 and I can see aal the folders at this level. Should be able to see any "folder" for this printer.....

Also, not sure if I have the syntax right i.e. should there be a space between lexmark and e232 ?

On the server , I have set security on the printer driver such that EVERYONE can print. It did allow my 9.04 system to print,

I also have a WInXPP on this LAN and it can print to this printer no probs.
The XP machine is on the domain unlike the Kubuntu box. But the fact that I can see the folders on the server using Dolphin and Konqueror
means access is not a problem.

On the Kubuntu box, I also see a message saying - unable to connect to CIFS host - when I try a test print. That must be a clue....?

Well, I solved my own problem by deleting the printer and adding it again in the CUPS browser interface, http://localhost:631/ Apparently when I was trying to add the printer in gnome-cups-add, I was entering smb://192.168.1.3 for the host, when I should simply have entered 192.168.1.3

Which is how I connect to my LAN printer, except that my wireless printserver is given a static address of 192.168.1.99 by my Linksys WRT54GL wireless router, to which it is connected via an eth cable.

[RESOLVED] Printing over the LAN

Got it!! Almost made me . Taken me 6 weeks to get this sorted. Thanks for sticking with me on this.

Changed the smb path to use the IP address instead as advised. Also realised that I was putting in the share name incorrectly. Finally, had to also put in the login details for authentication - I thought it was going to prompt me when required.
The only thing different is that I am using the Lexmark e230 driver at the mo rather than the Generic PCL5e +CUPS Gutenprint thing that I used previously. Will see if that causes any problems. One battle at a time.
