cant connect to network

i am using kubuntu for d frst tym and hav very little idea in working in dis enviornment.
i hav dell inspiron 1545
my network card is Marvell Yukon 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller
the sky2 driver is associated wid the nic. the card cannot obtain an address from the network. Works fine in Windows with same cable/network.

Actually the Marvel card is your Ethernet card. The wifi is Broadcom and you need to install the drivers for that. Right click on your desktop and open "Run Command" Type in "Hardware Drivers" (without the quotes) and possibly before you are finished typing it will give you a choice to choose from. Click on Hardware Drivers and choose the Broadcom STA Driver. You will need a connection to the internet to download this driver, preferably Ethernet. Then restart your system. Next, right click the Icon for internet in your Panel and add a wireless network.

That should have started up automatically when you plugged into the Ethernet socket without changing any settings. Did you add your own settings before plugging it in?

Okay, a little information needed. Are you using a Router? Hooked directly into your Modem? Have you tried to reset or restart your Router / Modem? Have you used that cable before? Can you try it on a different computer? Do the Router / Modem work with a different Computer?

Are you using dial-up networking over the telephone lines with your built in modem? You need to set up KPPP on the Internet Dialup Tool. You will find that in Menu/Applications/Internet. I thought you were using either Broadband or DSL. It looks straightforward, just enter your dialup account, username and password.

Okay, from what I can gather your DHCP Client is timing out. That is not you or your computer it has to do with your Broadband. First try to unplug your Broadband or turn it off for at least fifteen seconds to get a reset, Unplug it from the electric socket, not from your cable. Then, if that does not work you need to get a hold of your Broadband Network to see if they have a solution. This has nothing to do with your software or Kubuntu. Hope this helps, I'm out of ideas.
