    Samba Problems

    Hi All,

Am having problems with Samba on 9.1 Karmic since upgrading from 9.04.

I can connect to shares on other machines on my network (either windoze 7 or Linux) without any problems at all.

What I really need to do is access shares on my main 9.1 karmic box from the other windoze/linux boxes. I have installed samba together with a package called GADMIN-SAMBA which has a fairly intuitive looking interface to set up the shares. ps -A indicates that samba is running, the folder icons in Dolphin have the little globe on them to show they are shared but the other computers on the network refuse to see then or even acknowledge the presence of the karmic box on the network.

With 9.04 it was never a problem, it just worked "out of the box".

Below is a listing of /etc/samba/samba.conf which looks ok to mr.

    Any ideas ?

    Re: Samba Problems

    Hi,

I had a similar issue (Samba broadcasting broken after the upgrade to Karmic), and it got solved with the samba updates. Did you activate the updates repos in KPackageKit? Are you up to date?

      Re: Samba Problems

In reply to Imilano, I have enabled all the repos, my system is up to date , and it still cannot be seen by other computers on my network.

Some part of Samba must be working for me to be able to connect to the others, not being able to connect from the others is very frustrating.

        Re: Samba Problems

So, your samba client is working and the server stopped working.

Can you check that the samba package (exactly by that name) is installed? The client is always installed (as long as kubuntu-desktop is), but it has a different name. I would start there, it might have been uninstalled in the upgrade.

There is a samba section in System Settings, have you looked there? Of course it edits the samba.conf file, which seems to have been edited by you (the workgroup for instance is not the default). Do you really intend to authenticate the users? (as it seems indicated in samba.conf). The GUI to edit samba.conf I mentioned above guides you through, and would recommend a different setting for home use.

Anyway, if none of this things helps just let me know and I'll post my samba.conf and details of my setup, which is working fine in karmic.

          Re: Samba Problems

This is a list of what is currently installed on my system:

          system-config-samba
          samba4-common-bin
          samba-doc-pdf
          samba-ldb-tools
          gadmin-samba
          python-samba
          samba-doc
          samba-common
samba (SMB/CIFS file, print & login server for Unix)
          gsambad
          samba4 - 4.0.0
          samba-common-bin

I have left off most of the version nos & descriptions etc. A possible conflict between samba & samba4 ?

I have not manually edited samba.conf, it was set up by gadmin-samba. At present I am having problems opening a text editor as root & Dolphin seems to have lost the "edit as root option". I shall work on that on completion of this posting.

The odd thing is that I cannot recall doing anything specific in 9.04 to get it working, it just seemed to work out of the box, all I did was specify the shares I wanted and it flew.

Funny thing is, I re-installed 9.04 (under windows on an NTFS partition) and it does not work out of the box.....

I shall keep on trying but thanks for your help.

            Re: Samba Problems

Sure! We'll get it going eventually!

This will run the text editor in superuser mode
            Code:
            kdesudo kate
Maybe a firewall kicked in? Can you show the output of "iptables -L"?

              Re: Samba Problems

Tried a few changes to /etc/samba/samba.conf - no luck.

Nothing in iptables, no rules set, all is allowed.

                Re: Samba Problems

I am attaching my smb.conf. You may want, for a quick test, merge mine with yours, meaning: just add your shares at the end of mine, and comment out my shares, and of course please preserve your existing smb.conf. Then maybe reboot or restart the service, and see. How knows! It is certainly working here!

Note that I added a txt extension in order to post it here as an attachment, please rename it ....

                  Re: Samba Problems

Good idea, unfortunately it did not make any difference.

Your smb.conf file is very similar to the default smb.conf file which existed on my system until gadmin-samba saved it and produced the listing I quoted above when I used it to setup the shares.

I shall keep on trying !
