It dopes on my laptop with a Huawei E160 usb stick.

You just have to install network-manager-gnome and the provider list and reboot.

stick your usb modem in and you should get the provider list to choose your country, provider, etc,
Then edit your network profile accordingly.

Same here (back to wvdial in terminal).
I use an epivalley USB stick. It used to work without any hassles on Ubuntu (gnome). After switching to Kubuntu, it is back to stone age! (well sort of! )

            Re: Kubuntu Mobile Broadband

It seems that the KDE apps have a long way to go. While, this and the other glitches (posted separately on this forum) are not show-stoppers, kubuntu (to me) appears not ready for mainstream use. I regret to say that I won't be recommending kubuntu to my customers anytime soon...

(reposting this from another forum-post, since it seems to be relevant here too).

I finally dumped wicd and have started using network-manager-gnome.

It seems to have a glitch (if I switch off my wifi antenna using an external switch, it seems to disable wireless network; but does not enable it again when I switch it back on). I think this is not a big deal, considering the ease with which it handles my mobile-broadband.

              1. It recognizes my ZeroConf CDMA USB modem stick.
              2. I don't have to do anything to switch from the ZeroConf USB storage mode to the CDMA Modem mode. It does it automatically.
              3. It has my service provider on its list; so those settings are all automatically filled in. No need to google-around for those. (OK, I did have to type in my username and password )

So the only task I need to do now is to get it to autostart. For some reason, nm-applet requires manual start from a terminal prompt. For now, I use "nohup nm-applet &"; I plan to tinker around with /etc/xdg/autostart/nm-applet.desktop settings and see whether that will fix it.

PS: Yes, tinkering with /etc/xdg/autostart/nm-applet.desktop file worked. Here is what I did:
              1. Added this line at the end:
              X-KDE-autostart-after=panel
              2. Added "KDE;" to the "OnlyShowIn" parameter, making the line look like this:
              OnlyShowIn=GNOME;XFCE;KDE;

That's it. I don't know if this is the best / most-correct method, but it works. Will keep an eye out for suggestions.

                Re: Kubuntu Mobile Broadband

I also seem to be doing something wrong, I am running Kubuntu 9.10 on my Dell mini9, nothing happens when i plug my phone in with Internet sharing on. It does not show up in the dmesg or ifconfig,
Ifconfig shows Eth0,Eth1,Lo,Vmnet1,Vmnet8. I tried messing around with my WICD network and ended up crashing everything and had to uninstall + delete the wicd folder to get my network working again.
It worked before i had to install the Wicd Network to get my wireless working, so im not sure what to do next?

                anyone have any ideas?
