    Broadcom Wireless Refusing to Work

    Hi all.

Installed Kubuntu 9.10 but my Broadcom wireless won't work. I'd installed the b43-fwcutter package first but no networks were showing up in KNetwork-Manager. I then installed the bcmwl-* package from the live CD but not to avail as well, in fact, the indicator for wireless radio being on wouldn't come on after installing that package. I uninstalled both packages and then installed each on its own but again nothing. I then swapped KNetwork-Manager for WICD with each installed, but that did nothing too. Anyone can help get this wireless working?

The b43-fwcutter option only works for legacy Broadcom wireless chips in the B43XX series. What is the model # of your chip?

It's a BCM40100 radio. But this being an old eMachine laptop (M6807 model from '04) we're talking about, coupled with the fact that b43-fwcutter works perfectly in Ubuntu 9.10 and 9.04 should narrow our solution space.

I also had Broadcom problems when I tested this week. I observed the same problems as you on a new Macbook Pro with a Broadcom card. The wired was okay but it never found any wireless networks. I was running an Archlinux VM on the same machine at the same time through the wireless so the problem might be the driver.

I also tried the Broadcom STA drivers. Still nothing.

If HAL won't recognize it, b43-fwcutter can't use the firmware to drive it, and I assume you've downloaded the last available set of Windows drivers for it and installed them with ndiswrapper, then I am out of solutions. Sorry.

Are the HAL configurations completely different between Ubuntu and Kubuntu? Again, this radio is fully functional under Ubuntu's Karmic Beta using only the b43-fwcutter package where this isn't the case with Kubuntu. This can't have anything to do with the migration to devicekit as it worked in Jaunty and Intrepid as well. I haven't given ndiswrapper a try yet, so we'll see.

I cheated and installed to a virtual machine. That worked since the virtualized environment hid the Broadcom card from Kubuntu. I plan to revisit the native install a few weeks after the official release.

What does your dmesg say with respect to your wireless? Should have an error message in there somewhere... perhaps an incorrect driver is being loaded up. If that's the case, you'll see an error message.
