looks like currently wep do not work, it just requests ip and thats all and even wicd manager then looks like it is some lower level problem. i have atheros card on my laptop Compaq Presario CQ60.

Are you using plasma-widget-network-manager in Kubuntu Karmic?
In mine, under wireless, selecting WEP asks for the key and a number of options but not the IP.
I'm using WPA2 and it works without any problems.

Same here. WPA2 works like a charm.
If your wireless can use WAP2, use it.
It is safer anyway than WEB. You might as well run the network unsecured when you run WEB.
